Spokeshave: do you pull or push?

The place to talk about tools 'without tails', so come here with all your plane and chisel, burnisher and bradawl chatter.

Spokeshave: do you pull or push?

Postby Mike G » 19 Jan 2015, 17:40

I almost always pull the tool towards me, as my father did. Yet I see on youtube a number of videos showing it being pushed away, as if it were just a small plane. What do you do?

Both. Generally pull, but will push if it's a short cut and to save walking round the workpiece. If I need the extra control then will walk round and pull.

Pull or push - depends a lot on the grain direction and the wood

My bible on the subject of things to do with planes (Planecraft, Hand Planing by Modern Methods 1934) states "Normally, the tool is pushed, but on occasion it may be pulled" Careful consideration should be taken of the grain direction.

I use mine both ways, but probably push more. A lot of the time I'm taking tool marks off of curved edges, and pushing down seems a much more natural motion than pulling down.

By the way, do you have iron or wooden shaves? All three of mine are wood, two I built myself with Hock blades, and one from my great-great-grandfather.

Andy: I have that Planecraft book too (1980's reprint), and it's pretty decent.

Mine's an original Kirk and cost my Grandfather the princely sum of one shilling and sixpence.

Got the book and a few shaves:
A couple of very worn wooden ones, a few Record/Stanley, 2 Veritas and a modern wooden Woodjoy

I mostly push Mike, but occasionally pull when I need to.

I tend to pull, but on changing grain direction I try to avoid changing position, so go from pull to push as the grain changes.

The theory is that by staying in the same place and not moving the work either, you maintain the same consistent view and angles.
