Oh why, oh why did I have to go and look ...

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Oh why, oh why did I have to go and look ...

...at the size and length of an EMG needle. Why didn't I stay in blissful ignorance. Booked to have some tests end of January. It's for nerves and muscles. The EMG test they stick a needle into the muscle to test how well it is working.

Just looked up how big they are :o

Longest is 50mm and 0.45mm thick. :o :o :o :o :(

You're are not looking hard enough Roger. Some are up to 75mm, that's a whopping 3".

most sites say that it doesn't hurt though. :)

Take along some scary-sharp honing materials just in case the needles are a bit blunt!

The size of needle depends on the area and how deep the muscle is oh and how much should we say tissue is between the holder and the target. watch out for over zealous students wanting target practice in the glutes.
I can share your pain I am going to have A series of injections in my elbow joint on Friday the consultant always laughs when I go in with “my good arm” problem.

Roger I have had this done and can tell you it's more weird than bad in fact not sore at all just a scratch at first it's the pulsing that feels a bit tingly. Absolutely nothing to be worried about.

Hi Roger I did indeed they were testing me for Ms which thankfully wasn't the case. Bit troubling for a 40 year old but having had a heart attack and the fallout from that I just thank my lucky stars it came back negative. The worst part of it was the needle that went into the wrist above my thumb.

Roger, you still sound like a bit of a wimp at your age!

After my shoulder op I had to go for physio, and the first thing she did was remove all the knots in the muscles.

Easy peasy, says the Physio. We just stick some of these needles in.

As Bob says “Only when they hammer them in”. It looks like about a 5 ounce hammer :o

No pain at all until it hits the knot! :o :o

S H 1 T a brick, fortunately I had emptied the bladder before going, could have been embarrassing.

I am sure you will survive Roger, just get some gum/teeth guards so that you don’t bite your tongue.

I am sure a few people on here have low blood pressure and therefore 'slack' veins? They might have empathy with this story: I stopped a young, earnest, resident or houseman when he had twelve (12, the one after eleven?) attempts to find a vein, any vein, for a a "routine, just to be sure" blood check on my wife...he was not at all impressed when I did so, even less when I then reminded him - as a First Aider and Mountain Medic of thirty years experience - that the first rule was ALWAYS "to do no more harm"...you got away lightly Roger. :D
