• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I want to improve my easel by fitting an inner frame within the existing main "H" frame which can be cranked up or down for height adjustment of my canvas . Some of the more expensive models available have a winding system but their pictures dont show enough detail . I consider myself a reasonably practical person so the frame , runners etc are not beyond me but I need suggestions where to buy the trapezoidal gizmo and fittings - the ones on Amazon etc dont seem to fit my expectations . I want to be looking at a rod of at least 15mm or 20mm and approx 1 metre length . Any help much appreciated .

Is brass practical for you?

If so, Ironmongery Direct have skylight window openers of varying lengths. I think it's overkill unless your canvases are vast, but they look nice - I have one fitted to the skylight above our staircase. Ours needs a long handle, but I.D. has various designs, including with handles...

Eric - thanks for that , actually I wasn.t sure about the word "trapezoidal" - I picked that up along the way - the window openers look interesting but none of them is long enough as I would be wanting at least 60cm but preferably 75/80cm .

Windows . Problems were not long enough but also I could use something cruder / simpler .

I am thinking if I cant find anything suitable perhaps I could try , say , a threaded 12mm rod and nuts used scientifically ........

I find that when I am chasing a new idea like this , it's not knowing the accepted terminology for my searches is the problem .

You can get studding ("allthread" across the pond) in long lengths: at least 1 metre. IIRC, 8 mm diameter has 1 mm thread pitch, but it's 1.5 for 10mm and 12mm. I doubt it needs to be a trapezoidal thread form unless the canvas+frame is really heavy. You can get a choice of nuts pretty easily, too, including 'coupler' nuts, which are around 2x-3x the studding diameter.

Personally, I'd make a sub-frame with adjustable clamps, and a separate height adjustment mechanism. 1m ought to give you far more height adjustment that you'll actually use. I can't see how you can easily do both functions on a single length of thread in any case.

If you’re willing to compromise on features, you might find that scaffold screw jacks are a cost-efficient way of getting a long threaded rod. Although possibly not long enough for your purpose. Note that they typically have modified threads which prevents the nut using the whole length, but 500 mm usable length are easy to find and cheap. I do see longer ones on Amazon for more money which might be long enough for you. They can definitely support the weight.

Assuming you will have some means of clamping canvas support at desired height,

Why not try something like a Toothed Rack (<<<<google search)

If ever we needed a reminder , this is the value of asking others for their thoughts and ideas , I am now re-assessing my original idea and a max length of toothed rack of 500 mm x 15mm x 15mm will probably be the answer , unless I revert to studding which I have used for various clamps in the past and was my original fallback position .
So thanks to all those who replied .
