• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Interesting power line safety

We have a team of a dozen guys here taking 7 trees down that are growing into power lines.

Interesting to see how they achieve safety. We have three lines going across one end of our property. Even with the power off, the tree cutters are not allowed to work. They have to wait for electrical engineers to come and attach a shorting cable across all three wires and down to an earth rod in the ground. They do this at both ends of our run (so one in the garden and the other in the orchard). About 100m. Apparently this is in case someone accidentally turns the power back on - the special cables will short everything out and trip the switch at the supply station. Very smart.

The electrical guys stayed all day yesterday (when all the most dangerous work was done) and they also sent an auditor along to check for full safety.

Brilliant crew, doing a fantastic job. Mrs AJB T is persuading them to fit in a few extras  so I will be making the whole team bacon and sausage sandwiches for lunch and I imagine some beer money will be handed over.

We have enough wood to feed a log burner possibly forever!

The earthing straps would also be there in case someone starts up a generator and back-feeds the grid.

There are some fascinating vids on helicopter linesmen, flying up to half-million volt lines, offering up a wand to the line as they approach. This is to take the arc as the heli’s potential is brought up to that of the line (and again as it leaves). Some of them put a sled onto the lines and then start nonchalantly crawling along them… 😲

Puts a whole new context into 'Putting that spark back into your life' ;)
