• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Anyone use one? I have ordered one. They look interesting, I don't particularly use rasps but that might just be because I've never really had a decent one and these appealed to me (possibly just because I haven't bought any new tools for ages).

I bought an Iwasaki extra fine tapered half round file specifically for hand shaping the heel/neck transition of my instruments.

I love it, especially when I remember not to work it hard and even with just a little more than its own weight, it cuts more easily and thus more controllable. The finish needs sanding, but not much.

Wonderful tools for what they are for, coarse on one side, fine on the other.
Just be sure to make a cover for them, or they will attack anything laying beside them!

they are great tools, I used one for carving a neck on a guitar and it removes a lot of wood fast, so can highly recommend one.

Rasps are funny things. When you use a good one it just feels wonderful - cuts easily and you feel perfectly in control. But they cost a fortune. I have a Auriou rasp and it is a joy to use. One day I may well raid my wallet and buy a couple more.

I also have a Liogier rasp which is nice, but not in the same league as the Auriou in my opinion. And also some Japanese rasps/carving files.

The first rasp I remember buying was a Shinto. I used it a lot, but to be honest, I rarely use it now. I much prefer a more traditional style rasp.

Recently I saw a recommendation for a couple of cheap rasps on Amazon that were so cheap I thought it worth a punt. I can't find the exact ones I got but these look similar:

And to be honest they are now my grab first rasp.

When I'm doing fine work I'll grab my better quality rasps but when I just need to knock off a corner or flatten the side of a tenon these cheap rasps are just fine. That is the same sort of things I'd in the past use my Shinto on.
