• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Some light entertainment

I quite enjoy periodically tweaking the tools on my tool wall. I find it quite satisfying as it's a fairly quick job but also allows me to "tune" which of the tools are out on display (and easy to grab) and which are hidden away in drawers or similar. I tweaked it slightly fairly recently when I got my Clifton #4½, but I've just done a slightly more significant rearrange and it occurred to me that I have two very similar photos.

Does anyone fancy a game of spot the difference?! Or, if that's no fun, how about "how many planes† are there in the photo of the new tool wall"? Bonus points if you can ID them all ;)

Out with the old:

† Using the loosest definition of a "plane", so spokeshaves / cabinet scrapers count.

32 planey type things, and the red screwdriver has been abandoned.

You've got too much stuff!

I make it 29, but that's really not very many...:)

Don't you have any boxes and drawers with all the others in? Where are your moulding planes, hollows and rounds, miniature planes, beads, moving fillisters, sash planes... I bet you haven't even got a special plane for balsa wood models!

A Tool Wall is the essential for me; I've had one for decades, but as kit comes and goes it's constantly changing. The main thing is that all the tools I use most are directly in front of me within easy reach and can be replaced just as easily - Rob

Sorry, but you missed some!

Quite right - I was hoping you would appear to defend me!

I do have a drawer with some more planes in: a couple of #4s, a #4½, a #6 (which I've sharpened but never found a use for) and some shoulder planes. I've also got another "wall" (actually a bit of plywood hanging from a joist) with a coffin plane, my four home-made plough/grooving planes, a small Japanese smoothing plane and a wooden scrub plane. I'm sure that even if you add all those together it doesn't come close to your collection though :)

I don't think I've got any of those (unless one of my metal rebate or combination plough planes count).

I know you're all on tenterhooks wondering what the answer to the "how many planes" question is (or, more likely, you've completely forgotten about it now and have lost all interest :) )

Anyway, to put you out of your "misery", here's all the ones I counted (34 in total):

I am by no means and expert on such things but I have been knocking around woodworking forums for 20 odd years and I do not recall ever reading about a Quirk Router before.

Well, I missed the near invisible wooden spokeshave and the rapier 43, whatever that is.

It was a bit of a whim purchase from a junk shop and I haven't used it yet, but it looked quite interesting to me.

There's some info here: https://blog.vintagetoolpatch.com/2022/04/23/quirk-router.html

Mine's only got one cutter, but if I don't find any others in junk shops I may have a go at making my own.

I'm impressed you spotted the overhead #55 and the mini router plane. The #43 is a small plough plane, which is probably my most frequently used plough as it's a handy size & quick to set up.

#43's are the most underrated wee gadgets. Splendiferous!
I have a #44 and Record 405 (amongst others!!)and the 43 is just a joy to use by comparison. Easy set up, ferls comfy in the hand, fence is well competent. A good mate on here, known for his excellent carving skills, gave me mine.

Here's mine ploughing a groove in one of the drawer fronts from the travel tool chest:

It came with just one blade and making some more short blades is on my list of projects. At the moment I mostly use it with the (metric) cutters I made for my #45 / #55 (photos here). The problem with them is that they're a bit long so they affect the comfort of the handle somewhat. I'll probably make a 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm cutter especially for the #43: for bigger stuff I'm likely to reach for the #45.
