• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Just went in for my regular dose 100mg + large activator to be told new legislation prohibits selling them together.
You can buy separates but only in the small sizes.
Cant find any reference to the legislation online, anyone else know about this?
Cheers, Andy

Hmmm. I noticed that online. Where you could buy 50g and the aerosol, they're now separated. I can't find a British made set of thin, medium and thick. They're all separate.

Just looking on screwfix & you can’t buy them together there either, I’d not heard anything about it not being available together does seem a little bizarre

I can see a 150ml plus activator on their website, local branch has 6 for collection today

Is that not just the activator Jim?

Is it by any chance to do with behind the scenes guidance/legislation to hinder the 'enlightened' souls who wish to glue themselves to the tarmac etc.?

Would drain cleaner (aka HCl ) act as a debonder?
Just wondering!

Could be but skin generally doesn’t need any activator to stick itself to anything when using superglue DAMHIKT 🫣

River shop still seem to be selling combined sets. Large sizes and multipacks.

If there's a price difference the sceptic side of me says it's a sneaky price rise on behalf of the supplier.

Having spoken to someone on the supply front they suggest it may be down to restrictions for hazardous goods per shipment, the Glue itself isn't classed as hazardous for transport, whereas the accelerator is, as it has a flammable propellant.

This means that if they were both sold together, they would either have to be classed as hazardous as a package, or shipped separately and assembled when it reached the point of sale to the customer. Both of which companies will try to avoid as it will incur them extra cost either for transport, or in staff costs to put them together when they get to the shop.

Why do we have to have our accelerator delivered by aerosol, whereas other countries have theirs in small pump bottles?

Look up West System epoxies Malc. Back to bottles.
I'm afraid I couldn't find anything for CA accelerator on the West System site, @SamQ aka Ah! Q!

I was talking about Cyanoacrylate accelerator/activator. Sometime I use quite small amounts of glue, while an aerosol burst covers far more than I need. A small spritz from a pump bottle would be much less wasteful.

Ah. Oops. Sorry.

An Update:
Following my initial enquiries and getting previous feedback I have today received a company newsletter with further product restrictions from Chestnut Finishes and been given permission to quote the following text.

The situation is that the main component of the accelerator, the part that does the job, has been withdrawn from the retail market.

It hasn't been banned, but has been deemed as safe only for professional use.
The glues themselves are not affected.

We're able to continue selling existing stock of Accelerator, but any new product destined for the retail market will have to be re-formulated.

We already have a plan in place for this, and a replacement product will be available when needed.

So does that mean that the two items sold separately at Toolstation are NBG? That trying to buy anything as good as Mitre Bond is impossible ?

Morning Roger

trying to buy anything as good as Mitre Bond

It's on clearance at Toolstation at the moment.

I reckon that they have sold out and there might be an odd one or two on a branch shelf somewhere.
Presumably other stockists might have remaining stock.

Morning all

I think they withdrew all the stock, in the middle of my transaction.
By the time Roger opened the link, the stock data had been updated.
By the time I went to collect, it was not available and couldn't be served over the counter or re-ordered.
Bummer.
They managed to take the money though.

Cheers

Dave

I’ve asked the manufacturers why. Will report back. If it is to discourage some people from sticking their hands to the road then there are simpler deterrents

I've just found an unopened pack of Mitre Master (or wahtever it's called) in a drawer. No idea how old it is, but years, not months. Does it have a shelf-life?

If it hasn't been opened it might be OK, but I've had bottles that have been opened that have gone very thick to the point of being unusable in the past. That said, the glue these days tends to last much longer than the bottles themselves which get destroyed when the cap inevitably glues itself to the bottle and you have to use pliers to get it off, and then it rips the top off the bottle...

A quick spritz of silicone spray in the cap after use helps with that problem.
