• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Any HIFI enthusiasts amongst us?
I need to move on some Denon separates, Thorens deck and castle speakers bought, probably, in the 90s. Auction sites are a bit difficult for me to manage, no boxes no receipts, Any other options ?

AVForums has a broad readership and well established Trading section. I have sold, and bought from there, but not that recently but see no reason why things would have changed. They do have some relatively strict, but entirely sensible rules about trading (sole platform, photos, price etc)

Thanks Simon, I’ve little idea how much to offer them up for sale either. I will poke around there and see what I can discover

I've sold quite a few Hi-Fi separates through The Art of Sound site (https://theartofsound.net). However, I don't think it is as popular as it used to be. But as @SimonB suggests, Hi-Fi forums is a good place to sell Hi-Fi.

If you don't know, you can find 'sold for' prices on ebay. Next to the Search button click Advanced, then tick Sold Items. It's not perfect, for example it won't show item prices where an offer has been accepted, but it might be of some help to you.

A lot of HiFi sites have a 50 post/few months membership rules before you can sell stuff to avoid scammers etc.

EBay is a buyers market not much protection for sellers.

I was in a similar position a few years ago. Some old units, good but bulky and I just didn't want the hassle of selling on eBay etc.

I found a local chap, who used to run a well known proper hifi shop in Bristol, who came round, paid an acceptable price and took them away. He was a regular seller on eBay with a good reputation and earned his margin.

Maybe there are people like him in France? You could try looking at anywhere with classic hifi stuff for sale - they need to get it from somewhere.

Thanks Andy,
The HIFI is part of house contents we are doing our hardest to clear in SE London/NW Kent.
I’ll have a route around locally although not much time before I go back to France.

Unless there’s something of particular interest to the audiophile’s , older hifi doesn’t have much of a market. No boxes makes sending time consuming and risky, then there’s the chancers who’ll buy stuff then claim it doesn’t work when received.
The Thorens deck may be more desirable depending on which one it is arm and cartridge etc.
I you use facebook, stick it on market place, or gumtree, see if you can tempt a local buyer who’ll come round trial and collect.
That said there is a bit of a market for impressive “vintage” stack systems , but it all needs to be in very good condition and fully functional , the more flashing lights/ equalisers the better.

If there’s a vinyl collection, you might find that has some value, but for top prices condition is paramount and it takes time to sell piecemeal.

When I was a contractor stationed in Korea during the mid 1980s, I bought a lot of dbx equipment to set up my home system. At that time, the only questions asked to the vendor reps was "What costs more?", because cost was usually a good indicator of quality. Buying from the vendors at the military exchanges was considerably less expensive than buying the same items from U.S. shops, especially since there was no sales tax on the purchase. The same was true for the photography equipment.

About 15 years ago, I decided to downsize and started listing the dbx equipment on the German eBay. I started with the dbx 5BX-DS equalizer with a starting price of €500, with a note in the description that I had more dbx equipment to list. Within a day the bidding was just over €1,500 and it sold for €2,300 at the end of the auction to a guy in Switzerland. I had not yet listed the rest of the equipment because I wanted to see how much interest there was for the 5BX. The winner of the auction told me he would make me a very generous offer on the rest of the dbx equipment if I would sell to him and not list on eBay. He was driving up to pay for and collect the 5BX, so I agreed to hold off on listing the rest until he arrived. His offer was very generous and he returned to Switzerland with a lot of dbx equipment.

Indeed I found there is a strong market for Meridian, B&O and a Linn turntable. Some high end guitar gear goes for very good money too. Low end hi-fi probably will be slow to shift.

A friend does house clearances and moves stuff for auction houses. I mentioned I was after a separates, so he turns up one day with some mid level bits still in boxes. Cambridge audio, denon and technics. Two of each and a set of B&W speakers. They were getting skipped because of no sale.
I could only lust after this stuff as a teen. My wife wont allow it in the living room, but it is setup in the loft.
I could do with a turntable if you think of a price.

AV forums wont let me use there classifieds. When I explained the situation, items not technically in my possession, no boxes, no receipts, stuff in UK me in France, would have to be collected when I was next there, they were not happy.
