• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hello Peeps!

I though this might be a very cool ongoing thread and I'm starting it off with one of my personal favourites.

Bruce Dickinson - All The Young Dudes.

:eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

Anything by Eva Cassidy. The voice of an angel, she probably is one, tragic early passing. Real chill out and relax music. Check out her renditions of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Fields of Gold, What a Wonderful World etc . In fact. Just get the album Nightbird.

Nice one Andy. Wonderful artist and such a beautiful voice. I think it was late Terry Wogan who found her and brought her voice into our lives. Very sad.

I bought her album back whenever. I don't remember the album's name but I do remember this track...

Autumn Leaves.

Hard to pin down a favourite to name. I suppose if pushed it would be Jackson Browne

and Donald Fagen that I go back to regularly.

Generally I like variety - old stuff, classic rock, more recent alternative rock. Radio wise I listen to Absolute or XFM (now called radio X) but get bored when you hear the same stuff the next day. 'Gold' the digital station I can only take in short spells - there is old and then there's too old.

Can't stand 'soft' music as played by magic FM. I could listen to one Eva Cassidy track but I'd be gone by the second.

My brother was a big Don Fagen fan, and Steely Dan.

The only radio I listen to is in the shop which is either Classic FM or Radio 3.

Here's another couple of beauties.

Thin Lizzy - Whisky In The Jar.

Not forgetting a bit of Mr Bolan - I Love To Boogie. Yeah man!

I do like your picks Paul, a real favourite of mine is Joe Jackson such a complete musician.

Three for the price of one :)

Back story.

Working for a US company, I'd made President's Club and an all-expenses holiday to a fancy hotel in Cabo St Lucas, Mexico. BA had checked my luggage all the way through to San Jose Airport using American Airlines. There are nine San Jose airports as I subsequently discovered. The lass at Heathrow had tagged my luggage through to San Jose......... Bolivia. In my luggage was my CD player and CDs and at that point I also realised I'd forgotten travel luggage insurance. :(

A day later as the sun began to set. casting a rosy hue over the Pacific ocean, my luggage turned up. Cold beer in hand, I reclined on the balcony, put in my CD and listened to this.

Nice one Doug - Joe Jackson is indeed a very fine musician!

Hey Rog, I think I can picture you on that balcony listening to gorgeous Stevie, sipping the cold beer, gazing onto the ocean's red lit waters and feeling the chill-out buzz of loveliness.

During my younger years, I was a bit of a heavy rock junky which then drifted into a Goth Period  - including Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple, some Hawkwind, Iron Maiden (of course) and more...

Probably not everyone's taste in music, but here's a legendary rock band and this track is famous for a different reason other than one of Led Zep's signature pieces - 'Whole Lotta Love' from the Led Zep II album.

For those who like, it's time to crank up that volume!!

All a bit...

Alice pressed against the wall
So she can see the door
In case the laughing strangers crawl
And crush the petals on the floor

..was it?

Terry

My favourite band

With an album of an appropriate title :D

followed by the Floyd

Not forgetting Fairport Convention

Just listen to Dave Peg on bass, he played with Tull for many years.

I really must digitize my Thin Lizzy Live & Dangerous Album, that album was without Gary Moore of course and his Parisien Walkways must contain the best guitar solo ever, n'est pas?

You tube certainly can throw up some gems, I've been a fan of Pink Floyd for as long as I can remember & in the early eighties saw Steve Rothery many times live, so to find this was a real treat.

Is that the same Marillion that I went to see at the Brixton Acadamy in the early 80's? They certainly did not do Pink Floyd numbers back them and that does not look like Fish either.

Great song, but I'll stick with the original. Wish you were here is one of my albums I did get around to digitizing, will always be a classic.

I am a great Genesis fan, the early stuff before they went too commercial, the live Seconds Out album still gets a regular outing. The only band/group that I have every album they released, vinyl and CD.

That video was 2003 way after Fish left, I saw them many times when at collage in Birmingham, I was really into prog/rock in those days. I really admire quality guitar players probably because I'm so hopeless at guitar.

Ah ha!! .....(Not the band, but that now reminds me of a reet beauty! - coming up)......

:D :D I was in two minds of a bit of Led Zep last night or 'Whole Lotta Rosie' and then wondered if anyone was going to come in with a bit of ACDC - class act. I agree... that is definitely 'all cigar'.

It's darn good to see a bit of Ludvig on the list too - best ever composer in my humble opinion. According to the experts, his 9th has never been matched for complexity since published. The manuscript was 600 pages with several wine glass stains on the work.

Terrance!!  How very dare you!!  I don't know what you mean.........

My local pub years ago on the Isle Of Purbeck always had folk/Irish gigs playing - I had a few awesome nights there I can tell you.

Oh boy... Gary Moore... What a guitarist.

There's some fab stuff coming on here and it don't arf throw some memories around.

Back to the beginning of this post... A-Ha - The Sun Always Shines

Late 80's early 90's I think. I can't remember, but then, laughing strangers were always crawling.... ;) ;)

I think this is a really cool thread - our taste in music says a lot about our individual personalities. I have a huge varied taste in music. The sound is very important, as are the lyrics...

Here's another one of my personal treasures.

And let's not forget this classic from Judy Tzuke

And London Grammar

Nice one Roger. I think London Grammar is amazing! I shall go back and listen to more.

And ole Judy is looking pretty darn good for her years.

Here's a special track which I stumbled across when coming out of an interesting chapter of life back in 2000/1.

I think we can all relate to this in one way or another. I know I did.

We're all pilgrims treading the path of life.

Very lovely.

The real question is "Which other bands apart from Pink Floyd?" Desert Island discs, and I'll take 6 Pink Floyd tracks, and maybe an early Dire Straits track for Knopfler's guitar. I'm with Pinch on most of his selections so far, plus some Jethro Tull like DaveL......but let me chuck Creedence Clearwater revival into the equation. I'd be so bold as to say they're the best America has produced. Try this one for size:

Or the best ever version of Heard it Through the Grapevine:

Cheers Mike - a couple of fine additions to the list.

There are so many to think of, but right now, this springs to mind.

Greatest respect to Freddie (RIP), Brian, Roger and John for producing years of showmanship, amazing music and lyrics.

I like a LOT of different songs, artists and styles and really don't focus on one, but if I had to pick one then 'rock' is probably my go to genre.

To name a few favourites, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Nirvana, Killers, Oasis (idiots but good music), Elvis Presley, Queen, Queens of the Stone Age.

On the flip side we had a party at Trimble Towers at the weekend and took turns as DJ. We were singing, dancing and generally clowning around to such a diverse range as The Jackson 5, Rose Royce, Bruno Mars, Pharell, Daft Punk, Pat & Mick, The Stone Roses and this masterpiece…

Ignore the lovely lady dancer and the song/style/genre are all great fun. The song is El Caballito de palo by Joseph fonseca.

If you don't immediately hate it from that then here's his official video. It's definitely one for being drunk and daft dancing, but on a serious note I have really taken a shine to much of this South American style music since we holidayed in Mexico a number of years ago...

I am also oddly partial to a little bhangra when the mood takes :eusa-dance: You might remember this one from a good few years ago…

I'm guessing I'm banned from this game now…  :eusa-whistle: :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

Cheers

Yeah, I was going to mention Queen. They were brilliant for a while.........I'm thinking Night at the Opera, Day at the Races, Queen 11, and so on, but produced some unmitigated trash too. Jazz (inc Fat Bottomed Girls) almost undid all the good they achieved with their first 3 or 4 albums. Tie Your Mother Down, though, makes up for quite a lot of the lightweight commercial singalongs they made.

Hey Mark, you're the Govna and you do the banning ;)

Some cool choices there although not familiar, but I do like 'Lady dancing with a broom'

Hmmm Jazz... I don't mind a bit of jazz, especially when it's full throttle and manic within a smokey boozy room.

I'm sorry chaps, but I'm now in the mood for a bunch of Londoners who call themselves 'Iron Maiden'

What's the name again.........??

Here's another of my favourite bands - Blood, Sweat and Tears. They were never mainstream and I'm wondering how many of you have heard of them before?

And, of course, The Moody Blues.

Andy, I was thinking The Who only last night - honest! And I see you're a Genesis fan. I grew up hearing Genesis pouring out from my brother's bedroom. I was close to posting one of their classic tracks as an opener to this thread.

Anyway, The Who - another legendary band. Here's Roger (Not RogerS - sorry dude) doing a class act for the excellent film 'McVicar' - the theme song and 'Free Me'.

Superb!

I haven't heard of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Cool name and the chap has a very nice voice.

Nights In White Satin - Corker!

I do like Mark's JSM. I thought it was me dancing as a younger chap!!

Oh yes, I was a reet mover in me time you know! :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

Top banana.

Sorry chaps - me again. :|

I keep thinking of great songs and get a bit carried away.

U2.

Here are a couple of blinders...

Keep them coming...........................

I remember buying U2's Joshua Tree at the same time as I bought a new amp, speakers and headphones. I was living in a small flat at the time, middle floor, middle fat so I had neighbours either side and above and below. Wanting to test out the headphones I plugged them in, put them on, placed the record on the deck and ramped up the volume as far as it would go and laid down on the floor. After about 15 mins I remember placing my hand on top of one of the speakers, it was vibrating. I took off the headphones and was horrified to discover that the speakers had to be switched off when the headphones were plugged in.

I never had any complaints, but then if someone tried banging on the door I would not have heard them.

Our assembly shop at the factory was mainly staffed by Asian workers and they would often have their own music playing. One day they had an amazing collection of Beatles tunes in their own language played by a bhangra band. Made such an impression on me I still regret not finding out more about it or even asking for a copy. really fun sound :)
