Found you

Postby PeteW » 29 Jul 2021, 14:24

What a pleasure to see you all again. Having been pretty active on the other forum for many years (same username), I wandered away from woodworking for a while. Retirement, closely followed by a global pandemic, eventually spurred me back to the workshop last year.

Looking up some old favourite online haunts, I was disappointed to see few names I recognised. Eventually I found my way here and there was a shock of recognition - so many people who taught me so much about our hobby 10-15 years ago... AndyT, DaveL, Woodbloke Rob, Philly, Pete Maddex (whose 365 photo project inspired me to do one of my own), Gill, Vann, Heimlaga. And what a joy to see Alf around again - the much-missed Cornish Workshop can take much of the credit/blame for the large number of old handtools littering my own place of worship.

In the last few days I've spent many happy hours looking back here, and I'm looking forward to sharing our trials and triumphs :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Welcome aboard Pete. You certainly wouldn’t have learnt anything from me over there and I changed my name to keep my anonymity :D
cheers

Cheers fellas!

AndyT: what's in progress/in planning for you at the moment?

First up is a damned good tidy up of the workshop . As a major part of that, I need to box up a mass of old handtools and get them to one of those overseas aid charities. Usually acquired as part of mult-buys from the well-known auction site - you know the kind of thing... buy 4 chisels to get the one you want - they've been cluttering up the workshop for years.

Then I have two sizeable projects, which are urgent because I have the wood for both and it's taking up a lot of space. First is a pile of red cedar destined to become an Adirondack chair.

Second, a money-pit of sapele, bought last year to repair a garden bench. Inevitably, it turned out that to repair the bench would mean destroying it. It's nearly 30 years old and the legs, arms and seat slats are badly rotted but whoever made it apparently didn't consider that one day it might need to be disassembled. I decided to bite the bullet and make a replacement bench... and then got overwhelmed by the enormity of it.

I got into this lark to make beautiful little boxes; in 20-odd years I've managed to make two. I need to work on my self-discipline

Excellent!

I'm sure you'll get plenty of sensible advice / appreciation for all of those.

Welcome Pete. I've only recently moved here from the other place myself. Like you, it's a joy to see so many familiar names.

Afraid not... never posted the pictures online, and they're archived on an external hard drive somewhere (we had an extension built a couple of years ago and a lot of stuff was boxed up, much of which has not yet returned to normal service).

But you were, in fact, the inspiration and I enjoyed it a lot, as well as the discipline in taking the camera out. Might do it again next year. I know there's no real reason to wait until January 1 to start, but it seems like the right thing to do :)

Welcome aboard 'The Life Raft' Pete. I remember reading your musings 'over there' round about the same time I joined Charley's little soirée in blue; good to see you.
