Hello

Postby BucksDad » 02 Mar 2021, 21:42

Hi everyone,

Well after signing up a week ago I figured I best get my welcome post up.

I'm getting into woodworking - I need a hobby as work and my young family pretty much consumes me. In my teenage years I had a lathe and did some turning but never stuck at it. I was watching a few DIY videos on YouTube before Christmas and that somehow led me onto some woodworking videos and decided this was going to be the thing for me.

The last 2 months have been a complete time sink of watching YouTube videos and reading so much of the content at an UnKnown Website and I saw many of the posters I enjoyed reading there had the same names on this little corner of the internet, only they were still posting here regularly :D

I've always been a fan of forums and much prefer the engagement factor of them compared to the one way feel of YouTube so here I am.

Where I am now is my wife's home town and has a history of furniture making which I am sure I will not live up to. I've also since discovered I am only a 5 minute drive from an Axminster tools showroom which is no doubt going to be expensive and a short drive from cutlist.co.uk which will be perfect for the sheet good projects I have in mind, however hand tools and cabinetry is what I'm aiming for long term.

Looking forward to being involved.

Too right! And much better tradesmen's hourly rates. I was gobsmacked when I put my car in for a repair to a local garage (not a main dealer).

Hi James.

Sounds as though your journey into woodworking is very similar to mine. The internet has its downsides, but I'm certain I would not have started woodworking without watching YouTube and would certainly not have been able to learn so quickly. I try to supplement what I see on Youtube by consulting the odd book, and the people on this forum are a great resource too.

Good luck with it!

Hi James from halfway up on the right in the country, and also another chair making centre in many years gone by. When you’ve binged on YouTube and you think you know a bit about it, that’s when to ask the people that really know! Welcome, Ian
