Thanks for having me here!

Hi Folks,

It's a pleasure to be part of this group. The format reminds me of our old "TalkFestool" forum, which, sadly, is no more. It was a delightful place to learn about woodworking - and just about anything. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all, too.

I'm a Biological Oceanographer by trade - I'm a "Distinguished Professor" (they'll give fancy titles to just about anyone) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego (technically La Jolla). I love my work, and have benefitted from having a vibrant research group of brilliant graduate students and postdocs. That being said, I'm also looking forward to retirement, so that I can get a bit more serious about my woodworking.

I build mostly furniture - beds, tables, chairs, shelves and cabinets. My aesthetic is Scandinavian-meets-Japanese (which I've discovered is now called "Japandi"). I have a side business (Peter Franks Woodworking) through which I do occasional commissions (I can only build about two pieces a year). My business slogan is:

I'm slow.
But I'm expensive.

And yet people still commission me! It's weird. I'm presently working on a large sliding-door cabinet in hard maple that will go in the living room of a friend (underneath a giant painting done by his father-in-law). I'll post some pictures once it's done.

Thanks again for the add! :text-imnewhere: :D

Welcome, the Ginkgo cabinet is fantastic. Do you have a gallery of your work?

Having seen some of your work, I’m wondering about your output will be like when you finally start to get serious.
That cabinet is quite spectacular.

Thanks for the welcome, folks!

Lurker - I have a bunch of things to do for myself once I retire (dining room chairs, etc.). But I'm hoping to get more commissions. We'll see...

Rezi - I don't really have an official gallery. But you can see a lot of my work in my FaceBook album "Peter Franks Furniture". It's open to the public. This might get you there:

Rob - I'll try to post lots of pics. If nobody minds whether the work is recent, I could start posting pics of some of my older stuff...

Don't like: wood, engines, electrickery, decorating, tiling, laying stone, plumbing, gardening or any kind of DIY. Not wild about spiders either.

Well - as much as I would love to take credit for knowing that you liked pictures, Rob told me. :P

There's a genre of threads and pictures known here as "WIPs". That stands for work in progress, and that pretty much describes it. We all work in different ways, and seeing how someone else tackles a project can be far more interesting than seeing the finished result. So, I encourage you to take photos as you work, and post them with a small amount of writing, updating as you go.

I actively dislike Japanese and Scandinavian styles*, so I can imagine that a combination of the two isn't really going to float my boat. Purely selfishly, I'd love to see your WIPs, because I would still be keen on seeing the process even if the result doesn't do anything for me.

*You could add Krenovian (did I just invent a word?) to that list, too.

Exactly Mike, a picture paints a thousand words and try as I might I still cant quite get my head around how those leaves and that twig were inlaid into that cabinet.

Image posting can cause a problem for some so if you get stuck Peter just shout. This thread has a few hints and tips on image posting too. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2850

Human Genetics, although these days I mostly try and herd academics into doing what they are supposed to do instead of what they want to do..... no easy task!

I hear you! I just stepped down as Department Chair of Scripps - 115 professors and >1000 students to herd and feed. It was not my favourite thing to do...

Got it, Mike (and I think "Krenovian" might already be a word...). I tend not to take too many pictures as I go, but I'll see what I can do. Next time I do an inlay, I'll document it. It's not really that complex - just fussy. I have some WIP photos of the cabinet I'm currently working on; they're pretty boring. The cabinet is very simple in construction. But who knows - maybe I'll screw something up and have to invent a clever fix...?

Were you to go to Japan and actively seek out a modern Japanese 'style' it's appears to be completely based on Scandinavian form; there simply isn't one that's 'home grown' apart from their tansu chest of drawers, which probably (like many things in Japan) originated in China. I often have to smile when I see a Western interpretation of what is supposed to be a Japanese style with a curved torii gate top; no such thing exits in Japan except on proper torii gates  - Rob
