Another good job. Great work on the hinges, and I really like the lid.

Looks good Andy. Making the box “float” on its base is a nice touch.

Congratulations Andy on completing this box - very attractive. The detail will be very helpful for future box makers and is very interesting reading for a non box maker like me!

Thanks Robert and John :)

I'm never sure about how much detail to include. I guess anyone experienced can just skip a lot!

I like seeing so many traditional old tools in use. It is surprising how well they can work. Better than many overcomplicated newfangled things !

Nice use of an awkward bit of wood. As an engineer I still feel uneasy about clocked screws though (just to counter everyone else who would tut-tut if you didn't).

Thanks Pete and Tony.

I also like the way that antique tools can still do their job a century later, but I did let a few new ones in on this project. As for the clocked screws, I just think that the slots are so obvious it would be careless to leave them at random. Maybe another approach would be to tone down the new shiny brass so there's not so much contrast with the dark bottoms of the slots. I could do that with some ammonia or just wait a few years.

Brilliant Andy, well done. It's lovely stuff to work with, walnut, isn't it. That's a great result, and a bit more fun bench-time. What could be better?

Thanks Mike. Yes, I barely mentioned the walnut once the sapwood was gone. It really is a pleasure to use. Not as hard as oak or ash but very fine textured so it planes beautifully. Making the same box in pine with its hard and soft layers would have been much less rewarding.

I've got some mahogany put by, from an old piano, which might get used for something similar one day.

Got enough for an up lighter? My first one was done with hand tools.

Probably, and it would be fun to make. I do have the piano lid with a ready made curve to it, and I've not cut it down into just the straight part... but we don't have a lot of floor space for a lamp to stand in - we have to make do with the ceilings - but it's food for thought. Pity we don't need an umbrella stand either!

Nice little box Andy, which turned out very well and fwiw, I think you did well to initially get rid of that sap as it then leaves you with sound timber to work with. Walnut is lovely stuff and I’ve got some great boards of the stuff stashed away waiting for the ‘right’ project. I’m also hoping the the boards of Steamed Swiss Pear I recently got from Yandles will be equally as good; in planing an oddment there appears to be no difference whichever way it’s planed (with or against the grain) - Rob

Really enjoyable to watch, thanks for going to the trouble of showing details of construction useful for those less skilled
