Spirit level bubble

The place to talk about tools 'without tails', so come here with all your plane and chisel, burnisher and bradawl chatter.

Spirit level bubble

Postby Lurker » 15 Aug 2021, 09:11

I have a nice spirit level with one of the bubbles broken. Yesterday I found amongst my junk tools a cheap level and thus a donor bubble.
I think traditionally bubbles were set in putty.
Anyone got suggestions for setting compound?
I don’t want to use plaster incase I need to adjust before the stuff goes off. Think epoxy could end up messy.

Use small pads of blu tack to adjust until you are happy with it then use a permanent fix according to what you have in stock.

The bubble was the one that measures vertical.
The housing was a fiddly channel.
I have (just) used sealastic, it was messy but I think that I have got it right.

I am fixing a 2ft aluminium Rabone, after bending my go to cheapo from tool station.
I was going to get another, but they are no longer cheap!
I do have a very nice stabila for important stuff.

Usually it's plaster of paris in the old torpedoes etc. So I would suggest a bit of Polyfilla from one of those wee tubes for a £1

I have a really nice 6" spirit level. Its a wooden boat tail shape, and both bubbles are screw adjustable so whatever you do its always square.

I had to piddle some excess off the tube but it has worked ok
It was the bubble to the left.

I removed the duplication and sorted the rotation.

When you notice an image on your post has been rotated simply download and save that image back to your device, rotate it, save it then edit your post deleting the rotated image and upload and place in line the edited one.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

In a former life I repaired survey equipment. We always used plaster of Paris for setting bubbles
