Another tool I haven't used since school - I have one of these, can someone recommend a decent blade manufacturer please?

Niqua blades are good, available from many suppliers. Pegas and Olson are two other good brands but not so widely available. Flying Dutchman are the rebranded version of Niqua for the American market and can bought over here.

Axminster sells Pegus blades.
as already said above, 3 good brands worth buying.
Carbon fibre is just corduroy for cars.
