Help needed wiring a NVR switch ( one for Bob Ninefingers?)

Postby Lons » 11 Apr 2021, 23:57

Help please advice needed.

I have a lovely little Cowells 90 ME watchmakers lathe, built late 80s, it runs beautifully but the switch arrangement leaves a lot to be desired being currently just a 3 way toggle switch, centre = off, down = forward, up = reverse so if the switch is in any of the drive positions it will run as soon as it's plugged in also I'm always conscious that if the switch gets knocked it's not very safe. Apparently the NVR was an option and holes are there for 2 buttons but the cost for those plus a relay from Cowells is currently upwards of £90 total.

I decided a simple NVR would suffice and thought I would be able to just fit this and break into the incoming 240 volt supply feed, will that work or am I being naive?, Also I'm not 100% certain of the NVR switch contacts though I know the principle so not sure which of the contacts are live and neutral though I haven't had a multimeter on anything yet. The pic of the NVR switch wiring diagram is off the internet and not exactly the same model and my contacts are numbered 1 to 4. Lathe motor is low wattage.

I've tried to draw out a diagram of the existing wiring as best I can, hope it's comprehensible, all wiring colours apart from incoming 240v supply and motor wires are brown. I've drawn it as if looking from the front rather than the back and have assumed the unit with 3 connections is a start capacitor?

Without getting a multimeter on it and having a play around, I can't be sure, but from the diagram, it looks like you're input wires (live & neutral) go to 3 & 4 (it probably doesn't matter which is which, but I'd connect live to 4). The lathe connections then go to 1 & 2.

You might also need to connect the unnumbered pin to pin 1 to complete the coil circuit, although this might be done internally. If you don't make that connection, the worst that will happen is that you only have a momentary action switch.

The idea is that pressing the button makes 3 connect to 1 and 4 connect to 2, but only briefly. The voltage being present across pins 1 & 2 also puts current through the coil, which holds the switch closed against its spring. When power is removed, the switch springs open again.

Wire the switch exactly as per the last diagram at the power input

You need all five terminals to be connected

Thanks guys, I thought it was simple but baulked a bit when I looked at the wiring as I don't want to burn anything out, not at Cowells prices anyway. I know the A1 pin has to be connected as it holds in the on switch.
I'll make up some temporary connections to test before cutting a hole in the case for permanent fixing.

You only need to test it with mains input and make sure it holds in. Then turn off at the socket and it should drop out and not click back on when power is restored until you press the green button again.

Gents,
It has been suggested that my reply might has come over as a little terse.
That was not my intention but the replies were shorter than my norm as I was on my phone in a car park not on my preferred laptop platform where I type with ease.
Apologies if anyone was offended.

What's the fifth connector for?
I have fitted several (maybe even many) NVR switches over the years and never seen a 5 pin before.
have the rules changed again?

Most of those switches come with 5 pins these days mainly for connection to a thermal switch in the motor but obviously you can add a Estop in series with that too.

Previously these switches offered no protection to the motor over a proper DOL fitted with a thermal relay so whilst they had a NVR function that was about it. At least now they have the potential to protect the motor.
They still are pretty cr4p for woodwork use as they are not dust sealed and stop working.
Taking them apart to clean is a PITA as they have a few tiny items known as Ping - fu -kits. Treat them as consumables.

All done and dusted, works perfectly so a safer machine to use now and if the switch packs in it's cheap enough to replace for less than a tenner. It's well protected in there though, not a speck of dust to be seen when I opened the casing underneath. The hardest part was sealing all the electrics before cutting out the aperture - very carefully. :)

Once again thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
