Looking for a little metalworking help, please

Postby RogerS » 05 Jul 2021, 17:31

We've bought this old gate from a scrapyard for a tenner. That in itself was a winner. My rule in scrapyards is never ask first the price of the one thing you want. Place it at position 3 or 4. All the other gates were £40 and up ....

I digress. I'd like to commission someone to make a couple of metal supports for the hinge points if possible. I have no idea of the best way to do this. They could simply be a spigot welded onto some square section. Or round. The only sensible thought I've had is for it to end up welded to some screwed thread that I can then epoxy into the stone wall.

I reckons i has the stock in the pile for that Roger. Please measure the hole and let me know the offset you want. A think a plate and pin would be the easiest and let you fit it to whatever you want. If you want a pin instead i can do that easy enough and leave enough that you could just drill through the post and bolt the other side.

Thanks Dave.

Offset...now you're asking...what do you mean by that...even though I got metalworking 'O' level that was a long, long time ago !

The 'pivot' (for want of a better word) will be going into stone hence my suggestion re threaded rod at that pint to give a key to the epoxy. But open to suggestions, thanks.

Ok, gap between post and gate instead of fancy words like offset. how much pin do you want sticking out the wall?

Nice idea but it's going to look out of place with the rest of the gate.

I thought that you wanted a threaded bar to epoxy into the wall.
You could use these if they are long enough, and then put a bolt through the eye of this and also the “gate eye”.

I realise that but a pin sticking up onto which the gate is dropped would look more elegant plus minimal thread on display.

I think the most important question, Roger, is what this attaches to. If it's a wonky old dry stone wall then you'll have a different solution compared with a neat brick wall or a wooden fence. If this is light duty and you don't need built-in adjustment, then a back plate with a couple of screw holes for screwing-and-plugging is a decent solution. A wonky old wall will mean you need adjustment, and so a shaft epoxied into a hole for each hinge will give you a chance of getting the gate in the right place. So, a bit more info, or a photo or two....

You've got it in one, Mike.

I will need measurements for both pins then Roger.

Thanks, Dave.

Pin diameter can be 8-10mm. Length 40mm. No need for any sort of securing mechanism to stop the gate being lifted off.

Offset - 1 off 100mm plus length of the threaded portion.
1 off 80mm plus length of the threaded portion.

If you feel the need, but it isn't compulsory and you can pick a charity. I prefer my donations to charity to come from the pot I put to the side and remain my own business, don't ask why, I'm just weird. :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Thanks Dave. The length of the screwed thread part? Probably 75mm? Is that OK ?

Yep, though it won't be a perfect thread for the last 25mm as I'm cheating a bit and using a coach bolt, save me having to cut threads and better steel than threaded rod. I'll leave them a tad long so you can make of it what you wish. Or I can flip it round and have 50mm off thread on the end with a clear shank on the middle.
