Anyone know what these would be used for?

Postby Lons » 06 Dec 2021, 11:29

I've been given these hand tools all marked Moore & Wright, Sheffield and I assume are engineering tools, in lovely condition. I have no idea if I'd ever use them but would like to know what their original purpose was. Does anyone know?

My guess would be bearing scrapers for the old type babbit bearings, but I might be wrong.

Engineer's scrapers, often used on bearings.

I've read a lot of debates about this over the years on the Old Tools List, and favour a slightly broader church as a result. :D

Indeed that is what they are. We have a set in the cupboard here, but not as comprehensive. They seem to be one of those sort of tools like the patternmakers plane, which look really interesting but it is hard to find a modern use for - anyone still use them ?

Yes they are I use to use them many moons ago and they still have a use today especially if you restore some of the older machines the flat ones are great for scraping in the ways all be it hard work.
I can still remember making a straight edge with them using a surface plate and angle block.
The three on the left are for use on internal bearing surfaces and the two on th right for mainly flat work

already answered, but these are still very much used, often for bearing surfaces like under machine beds and ways etc.
that's a very nice set you are showing.

Thanks all, much appreciated, I'll do a bit of googling now I know what they are, it's highly unlikely I'll ever use them but will be interesting to read up on them.

I've been sorting out a friend's garage after her husband passed away a year ago and these belonged to his father so they're a old set. Her husband was worse than me for hoarding  I've also be given an old rotary tool kit which looks virtually unused, it's Woolworth brand so that's a while ago.

They work fine on wood too, I have used them to fettle wood planes as well as metal ones.
I blagged a woolies rotary tool on the last day of the closing down sale and it’s still going strong.

I'll take a photo to see if it's the same as yours. It's in an aluminium case complete with holder stand and flexi shaft, I have a Dremel already but useful to have as a back up.

EDIT

Lons, here are some of your scrapers from the 1938 M&W catalogue

Here's a good video of them in use on a babbitt bearing for interest:

That's the same one. Flex drive died quite quick but the rest has been fine, it's my only rotary so it's had a fair amount of work.
