Jerrims Engineers Vice - what to do with it.

Postby Peri » 26 Mar 2022, 21:11

I picked up this Jerrims vice that was destined for the scrap.

My wife has asked if I'd like to donate it to the small firm she works at, but it's so unusual I'd like to know a bit more about it, especially if it might be worth anything, before I blindly give it away.

The normally 'fixed' jaws have locating pins that can be removed, allowing them to rotate, and it's a bit of a beast - must be 30 kilos or so at least.

Any one have any thoughts?

(Edit - I've tried everything I can think of, I can't get the photo's to show correctly - sorry)

I may be wrong, but I would say it's a vice intended for a shaping machine judging by the angled bolt-down slots (or it's just a design feature and could be used on any machine regardless), the force of the shaper head skimming a piece of work in a vice with straight slots can loosen it off and move the vice during work, whereas the angled ones create a sort of taper and lock the vice in place against the cutting force.

It's been on a pillar drill ever since I've been at my workplace, management finally decided it was time to buy a new replacement.

As I said elsewhere, I just wanted to make sure I didn't give it away only to find it was the last working example of the worlds most expensive and sought after vice !

This page shows that the patent was at least a century ago

Small world - Vessey Street is about a 10 minute walk from where I grew up, and 3 or 4 streets away from where my wife now works - despite her never living anywhere but Telford!

I think that means you really ought to become the custodian then!

I just thought to look up the patent - 1918 -

with later improvements
