No more bargains on eBay

Postby GarF » 22 Jan 2022, 16:05

Unless I'm using the wrong search terms it seems like there's an awful lot of rusty old gouges listed for top dollar, and joinery shops offcuts cut into inch thick bowl blanks. My personal favourite today was this cherry tree which appears to have been stabilised with unicorn's tears. The trunk sections are splitting already.

At GBP75.00 looks expensive. :o

What would the yield be from that lot once splitting is cut out? Small bowls? Spindle work?

Probably. For similar money I could have a cubic meter of kiln dried hardwood logs delivered on my drive.

In reality I only went on to see if I could find serviceable scrapers and gouges to try out some of the tips on the excellent videos Richard Raffan has put up on YouTube recently. Experimenting with different grinds on brand new tools seems like a waste of good steel.

I'm all for renovating old tools, but these look too far gone.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185258886596?hash=item2b224a45c4%3Ag%3AWRQAAOSwnz9h5CRi&LH_ItemCondition=4
Maybe the handles could be salvaged

They are Crown tools so should be good steel, probably would clean up using a wire wheel.

My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.
