And when down at bottom of the bore it's helpful to use an angled cuter with good side and end rake clearance to avoid the snatching you can get with wider tool bits hitting bottom.

Thanks Chas, much appreciated.

I've just started a pencil pot in willow. It had a wee knot which I hoped would turn away but alas no. So I cut some 10mm plugs, heaved the pillar drill onto the lathe bed and indexed 6 holes one of which drilled out the knot. Holes glued and plugged. If it all comes out as I hoped I will show the result. If not than more kindling.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

What size forstner did you use?

I take it up in stages, full diameter is too much to take on end grain in one bite.
I think the largest in this instance was 2-1/4" before I finished off with boring tools to approx. 60mm.

Nice pot and I like the use of a glass as the insert at least it can hold water without damaging the wood
