A few turnings

Postby DaveL » 09 Aug 2022, 15:52

You may remember that sometime ago Mike had some bog oak for sale, I went along but being an awkward sort of chap I came away with a slab of yew. I found a Dutch wood turner on youtube demonstrating turn some platters so I had a go with some of the yew.

This was the widest part of the board, the plater is ~ 13" in diameter with a flash of sap wood on one edge.

Complete with some worm decoration.
The second one is slightly smaller at 10"

No natural embellishment on this one.
We had a new neighbour move in across the road from us. There was a very large conifer in his back garden that made the garden very over cast. So he called in some tree fellers who duly cut it down, I spoke to them as they were starting the job, on my way on my bike, they agreed I could have some of the tree, when I got back. I was quite pleased the tree was down on my return (I had been to Stowmarket Golf Club, they do good coffee and cake :D ). The chaps had a number of large bits waiting for me, I took all they had saved for me. This is the first bit of conifer I have turned, the grain does tear if the tools are not very sharp and some use of the 80 grit gouge was necessary.

All of these things are finished using the Chestnut abrasive was followed by micro crystal wax.

I have another bit in progress, Mike kindly gave me a piece of bog oak, I have rough turned it on the lathe,

but I need to get some epoxy to fill and stabilise it before trying to finish turning it.
Regards,
Dave
My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.

Yew did OK,
I'm always nervous turning bog oak, something always seems to tell me to get it finished and surface sealed as soon as possible.
Somewhat illogical considering its age and as in your case out of its original environment for many years.

Well turned not tried conifer I did have one taken down last year over 4' diameter did not fancy turning that. Not only that but was too busy to convert it as a new shed was going up and the old workshop being moved to the end of the garden as a wood store.
Not turned any bog oak either that piece certainly will need something doing to it hope it turns well for you

I do love the look of Yew and it turns very well but the bog oak looks like an accident waiting to happen.

I've seen some stunning turnings done with Leylandii. Don't turn your noses up at conifers.

That bog oak would look nice with brass powder in the cracks. I'm cheap so get the sweepings from my local key cutters.
