I have an idea for a coffee table.

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

I have an idea for a coffee table.

Kinda want to think out load on this. I have an idea for a coffee table.

Some of you may remember this

AC617F7D-9CA0-4A9C-AD38-E7A2F470EEC6.jpeg
(251 KiB)

made by Pinch of this parish and is the centre piece in the back of a settle.

Here is the original design of that logo as found in a staircase in the V&A

E3E0B062-DA81-4978-863D-01AD2F68B4DA.jpeg
(22.58 KiB)

I am wondering if I could alter that design to make a couple of table legs. The top of the V’s arms supporting the table and the bottom of the A’s legs resting on the ground.

I am wondering if these would look cool in metal. I am thinking coffee table height, about 13” high. Table top would be in wood about 16” wide. Not sure what metal or how thick. I met someone yesterday who could definitely make them.
Or maybe I should cut from a solid piece of wood. :eusa-think:

Design and imagination never my strong point. Would be interested in any thoughts.
cheers

Draw it out with the base of the V meeting the legs of the A. I think it alters the design significantly and looks busy.

Does anyone actually use a coffee table? Aka trip hazard always in the way.

You could do a console table instead and incorporate that design either into the legs, drawer fronts or even under a glass top.
Don't like: wood, engines, electrickery, decorating, gardening or any kind of DIY.

I’m looking at one now. Littered with books, magazines, and games. It is up against a wall. The V in that image wants another one to go against a different wall in the same room. Maybe I should call it a side table rather than coffee table.
Console tables to me are full height in a hallway or similar.

Trying to draw something now.

It would need to be different proportions and would look very different. Here goes, imagine you have metal A"s and V"s, the cross bar of the A needs to be lower so that the point of the v goes through the triangular hole in the A to touch the floor, this then forms a free standing criss cross frame that the top sits on. There would be three points of contact on both the floor and the underside of the top, the more weight put on the top makes the frame brace more.
Probably badly described, can attempt a drawing if needed. Ian

Well my drawing isn’t up to it so modelled it instead, not as successful as hoped and it would need to be fastened to the underside of the top then it would brace itself. Ian

Ian. Thankyou. Not just not just for the design but the way you modelled it. I will find some wire tomorrow and have a play.

Andy,

Not sure if I can articulate this right, but rather than having the legs created from the V and the A, could the V and A in their circle be fitted in the middle of X cross legs, or something similar like two back to back Cs like a scissor arch.

Just a creative thought.

I had that settle made for our 25th. Next year will be our 30th. (August bank holiday). My ideas do take some time to reach fruition.
She is getting a bbq for Christmas :)

Thinking if I could make one leg from the A the other from the V but with only point of contact on the base of the V perhaps this would be unstable.

My cad skills are not great. Scissors and cardboard may be the way to aid my visualisation of size and scale. :eusa-think:

You do not need CAD skills, if you have powerpoint or any drawing package really, just save a V and an A as separate text boxes then change the size and move around until they look right. You can change the font, scale one larger than the other etc. Should give you a basic idea even if you then need to tweak and less messy than cardboard!

OK. With Powerpoint and an alternative definition of CAD has led me to here.

I do not like the font but I searched high and low last night for something to replicate the curves of the original without success.
I think with the right front and better spacing my idea has legs - pun intended.

I have tried to contact Paul to see how/where he got the original design but his email bounced. I hope he will see a PM.

Can anyone help me with the font?
cheers

Victorian font ....it's on the tomb of Albert. But that's about as far as I got. A lot of Victorian fonts are fancy. I suspect that this font was designed as it would be easier to carve/sculpt. Humbert was the architect of the Royal Mausoleum.

Thanks Malc, I appreciate the effort that went into that.

What I still haven’t found, and I have trolled through 200 Victorian fonts, is one that has the nice curves in the verticals of both the V and the A and the arch in the A’s horizontal. I hope Paul( aka Pinch ) still has his original design/artwork and if it is digital I should be well away.

It would be so cool to replicate the design in the settle’s back into some table legs.

I have contacted the relevant department at the V&A, Design Arcitechure and Digital.

Andy

Take a close up photo of the V&A from the settle and I'll have a go at tracing it in Inkscape.

Edit. Just gone back to see the one at the top of the post. I could do with some more contrast. M

Malc,
has come up trumps and after a lot of toing and froing he did this for me

V&A Final.jpg

When I can find my circular tuits I will use this as a pattern to cut out the design in 1/4" thick plywood to enable me to see how it looks in the round.

Don't hold your breath folks it will be anytime in 2022 before this gets started.

Thanks again Malc, enjoy the beer

+1
I think I might through tenon the tops of the V and A into the apron of the table to get maximum rigidity of the leg. Are you proposing to have the letters on all four sides? if so joining the legs of the A at the corners will help enormously in creating a rigid assembly.
