Ziggidy Man

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Well I never expected this simple little children's toy to attract so much interest.

It is great fun, when you have two, to see them race against each other.

Andy - or anyone - What did you paint the man with?

I'm thinking get some acrylic artists paints from amazon and lacquer it afterwards.

Tried google but ended up reading about plant dyes and melting wax crayons. Can't see this will get chewed on but better if it is something non toxic.

I used acrylic paints and clear varnish and fine permanent pens for the finger and face details.

Correction. Soory, I should have checked first.

The coloured paints are actually Humbrol and Plasti-Kote enamel only the varnish is acrylic. All deemed to be safe for toys.

Yep those little pots used on the Airfix kits. Some of mine must be 20 years old and still usable.

I have 2 grandchildren aged 3 and 4 1/2 and can feel a pair of these coming on - maybe in the form of Capt America and Peppa Pig! Nice one.

When I was working for Ax some years ago, I mentioned to one of the marketing team that the firm (at that time) didn't sell any 'child safe' paint. I haven't checked lately, but that situation may have changed. When I do my ZM's I'll need to invest in a few pots of paint - Rob

First rough attempts at ZM late this afternoon were a disaster; I've seen drunks on New Years Eve behave better!, so I've printed off Robert's rather excellent pdf and will have another, slightly more scientific attempt on the 'morrow - Rob

I've made a proper one and it works. I've also made a stand that the board end slots into.

I'm an engineer not an artist but I'm going to have a go with some paints. Will probably be rubbish but either way pictures to follow :)

Rob - make the mans arms a gnats too long and file/sand them down until it works. I filed (with a metal file not a rasp) the underside of the arms flat and smooth too and that speeded him up a bit.

Drill jig worked well

Hole on the peg, drill new hole, turn board over, repeat and eventually

All holes equal spaced diagonally. Never measured horizontal and vertical afterwards but assume they are close to drawing.

Thanks Robert. I intend to have a dedicated ZM day tomorrow and see if I can't crack the little blighter! I'm going to trace the outline of ZM (from your pdf) onto some very thin aero ply to use as a template and I've earmarked some off cuts of decent 2mmish thick veneer (walnut, oak, cherry etc) to make some thickish ply for the actual ZBloke.

Thanks also for the tip about making his arms a smidge longer and 'sneaking up' on the fit. I'm going to make a fully working prototype before making the actual project(s).

I ought to be able to report a bit more favourable progress tomorrow; onwards and upwards! - Rob

Robert you need to add an extra hole as indicated below to catch the blighter at the end of the run and stop him falling on the floor.

personally I prefer not to drill the holes all the way through, looks neater and less tear out.

fair enough, ours got hung on the wall with a little block near the bottom to hold it away at an angle.

Looking forward to seeing your enhancement.

I've been at it for about an hour after brekki this morning and built a super accurate prototype as per Robert's excellent pdf, with a prototype ZBloke made from a tracing of his original ZM. I used some rubbishy 'Silverline' 6mm (supposedly) dowels with spacings as instructed.

Guess what? Result!! It worked first time without any arm length fettling :eusa-dance: but the stand needs to be tilted back around 10deg or so to stop him falling off the pegs and plunging to a grizzly end on the floor - Rob

My stand tilts it back 2.5 degrees and works well.

about 250 mm sq base. 18mm wbp ply with all the edges rounded and a bit of black spray paint.

Take a video on you smart phone. You do have a smart phone, don’t you? :)

Upload to you youtube account, you do have a youtube account don’t you? :)

Post the link here.

If you don't want to sell you soul to youtube. Upload the video to the dropbox account, link top right of the WH page and I’ll upload to youtube.

Two near identical ZBlokes dun n'dusted, apart from a finish which will probably be Polyvine Acrylic gloop of some sort. By far and away the worst part of the whole process is sanding each ZBloke through the grits  - Rob

Edit: once I've got them polished Andy, I'll take a video and attempt :eusa-whistle: to upload to the Dropbox
No paints I'm afeard (apart from house paint) and to order a few pots of paint etc will be the better part of £30  so ZB's will have to be acrylic. If I had a very few basic colours (black, white + a couple of others) a ninja ZB would look quite cool - Rob

May have to pass on that one Andy and make do with still pics instead. Painting/varnishing in progress...that's between struggling with sorting out a 'Kumiko' panel (which I think I may have cracked :eusa-dance:) - Rob
