Housewarming gift- end grain chopping board

My friend is building a house and on a recent visit he had been fitting the kitchen. He’s had some oak engineered worktops fitted.

There were some off cuts so I said I would take one and make it into a chopping board for them as a house warming gift.

It’s nothing special but they liked the thought and the fact it’s made from off cuts.

Good use of those offcuts and a nice result.

Knowing how my face grain chopping boards deteriorate over time I cant imaging how these end grain boards stand up. I’m gonna have to make one.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Thanks all, my workshop has been inaccessible for the last half a year due to being piled high with furniture etc during some building works. This was the first chance I had to do something in there really which is nice. A few other little projects in the pipeline- some drawers to fit my shelf unit in my wardrobe and a bench seat with drawers in the hall to tackle shoe-maggedon which is the current state of affairs in there. Both plywood construction so nothing exciting but I hope to top the bench seat off with some beech slabs I have from a tree we felled in the garden a few years back.

I used TB3 Lurker.

They can look a bit tatty after a while Andy but a quick re-oil freshens them up, I made some walnut and oak ones a few years back and a cherry and walnut one for my mum. I just use olive oil in the now so no food safe issues.

Nice job; I've never had much success with end grain boards, even using TB3 or Everbuild D4 (as good and mucho cheaper) as they always seem to delaminate after a while. I've got a nice, thick chunk of quarter sawn Bubinga that would make a good board but it's too good for knife work; probably not the best timber to use either in terms of food safety - Rob

Very nice, I seem to remember reading somewhere that olive oil will go rancid eventually, is that true?

It's not recommended but olive oil can be used; better to use food safe medicinal paraffin; plenty on offer in your local chemists or you can easily buy a proprietary brand of the stuff (and pay more) - Rob

Not noticed it happening. I only used it on this one like another wood finish oil by rubbing it on and buffing off the excess after a few minutes but the other boards I soaked overnight over a year ago and they seem ok. I suppose they get regular use and are washed in the sink so maybe that helps?

Passed like ships in the night Rob!

I knew there was a proper oil that was better to use but I was in a bit of a rush to get it done :D

Mineral oil - I've been told, that unscented Johnsons baby oil is perfect for boards :)
Two thirds of people don't have a clue about fractions - and the other half aren't much better.
Good decisions are based on experience. Unfortunately experience is built on bad decisions.

Very good. I am embarrassed to say I probably throw more oak offcuts in the firewood pile than is needed for several of these each week. I might have to have a re think aka guess what the family are getting for Christmas this year!

I use this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/LINCS-PRODUCTS ... 91&sr=8-42

5 litres for £20 delivered. It was actually £14 when I bought it. Lasts a long time, does not go rancid, has no smell, is food safe, and is cheaper than olive oil.
