Linseed & Stain

Postby Phil » 07 Feb 2021, 18:25

I am busy with another effing table

Nice table will post elsewhere

Timber looks and smells mainly Kiaat

At this stage finish will be boiled linseed, my go to finish,

For a finish I need to apply some "darker" stain

What is in stock is some Teak and Walnut stain. Both Genken Nova which looks and smells spirit based

Question - can this be mixed with boiled linseed as a 'finish'?

I have spent lots of hours scraping and sanding from 180 down to 220 and would hate to stuff it up now.

This is what scrap is for, Phil. Do an experiment. Personally, I think you've got the choice of two approaches: either mix the stain and the oil and apply together, or apply the stain, and leave it a long time to dry. De-nib, then apply the oil. The danger with the latter, of course, is that the oil removes the stain, which is why I said you need to try it first on a scrap. The danger with the former is that they don't mix together properly, and you get uneven colouring from the stain.

Thanks Mike.

My past experience was stain and then oil and most of it wipes off.
I have also tried mixing, not much success.

Will go to Mica in the morning and see what they have in stains and oil.

Last resort is PU.

I'm no expert on finishing, Phil, and I'm not a fan these days of oil as a finish, but I go by the rule that your colour and your finish must have different bases. So if you use an oil-based finish then you need to use a water based stain.

Mike, interesting.
Not viewed it like that before.

Thanks very much, will rethink my finish.

Took a drive to Chamberlains & Mica.

I also needed some sandpaper, 180 & 150 & 320/340
180 lots of stock
150 two sheets
320/340 zippo

Then looked at all the stains, not much new that I haven't tried before.
They even had Danish Oil in stock.

Took a bottle of Teak gel stain, new one for me.

Asked where are the water based stains? Complete Blanklook!
Have you got shellac?
Hyde glue?
Having fun seeing the look on their faces.

I have a 'test' area' on the cross piece under the top. Not visible unless you turn the table upside down.
Marked off sections and a piece of paper taped down to log what is used.

Nova Teak - spirit - dab on wood
Nova Wallnut - spirit - db on wood

The Teak is better shade of the two.

Will need to do more experimenting.

I do have a problem with one of the cross pieces on the legs.
It is sturdy, in good condition.
Problem? It is Oak!!!!
Rest of table is Kiaat/Imbuia

Will need to seriously think of what I will do with the Oak.

{Edit}
I will search my archive on finishing and also a Duck-Duck

Will not rush into this one ...............

I've never had any issues with interaction of finsh with spirit based stain.
I'm sitting in a room full of home made or refinished furniture all with Rustins medium oak spirit stain and thinned satin PU

I try and avoid coloured finishes as I lke to choose the depth of the finish without having to deal with the change in colour for each coat. I have a piece in the bedroom where I had to put on several coats of coloured varnish to colour match other things in the room and ended up with that high build varnish look that I hate.

I prefer a more natural look on the timber, hence leaning towards oils.

I still have 2 small tins (half) of Rustins stain, Teak and dark oak which must be at least 20 years old.

Even matt PU is still a bit shiny. I do use it.

Stains, whatever I have used, tends to 'rub off' when oiling.

A PU with colour reminds me of 50's and 60's furniture.

The best stain, permanent, that I have used is Amonia and fuming.
On Beech and Oak, you can control the level of darkness by time and qty of amonia.
The smell clears all the sinuses

Experiment .................
A wipe on mixture

5ml Turps
10ml boiled linseed
20ml Wooddoc 10 (like a PU)
That all looked fine ready to mix

Need some stain
Then added 30ml Gel Stain.

The gel stain floats in little blobs.

Throw it all out, clean the jar and large syringe.

Cross off that one from the recipe book.

This is the top of one leg.

Very nice shades, even a reddish tint. This bit is not Kiaat (not the Kiaat that i have used in the past.

I have used the underside of the table to test the stains.

Not sure how clear this is.

Actually the best looking finish is the BLO.

Will leave it for a couple of days.
