Wood stains

Postby Andyp » 03 Jul 2022, 11:31

Oh how I wish I had written this down..
Back in 1994 I used a stain to bring out the grain in a dining table. LOML would like the V&A table the same colour.
I would have sworn that the only stain I have ever used was medium oak.
The only tins I have in the cupboard are Colron Jacobean Dark Oak and Colron Medium Oak and I have just bought Chestnut Medium Oak.

Here are the three of them side by side on top of the dining table.

Left to right… Colron Geogian Med Oak, Chestnut Medium Oak, Colron Jacobean Dark Oak
Langlow Patina was the finish used and by comparing to old photos the table does not seem to have faded.

I am posting this more as a reminder to you all to write down the finishes used when making stuff ‘cos you never know when you might want to repeat .
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Have you misremembered?
That table surface looks like it’s bare wood waxed to me.

Misremembered is more than likely.
More experimentation necessary.
I do wish that I had kept a project book though.

How right you are.
Dunno why I put a tin of Patina in the upstairs bathroom cabinet rather than with all the other wood finishes in the workshop but now that I have found it I slopped some on another piece of oak and although the image has greyed it a bit to the naked eye the colour is the same as the table.

Patina is not a wax BTW but a very hardwearing easy to apply finish that has stood the test of time on the dining table. Info here. https://www.brewers.co.uk/product/HA4065Q

I was going to varnish, satin, the V&A table but chief design authority wants the same as the dining table and as it is so much easier to apply I am happy to oblige.

That looks interesting stuff, Andy. Very tempted to try some.

I was using Blanchon floor finish (as another site did a tint test which suggested that it didn't affect the colour of the oak) but then Craig Salisbury recommended Morrell's and I've used that on a couple of the rooms (once I managed to get the damn lid off !). I hadn't quite appreciated how little it affected the colour of the oak...and now realise that the Blanchon does add an 'orangey' tinge ...not strong but noticeable when you need to sand an area to let a door swing properly, then recoat with Morrells and you then see the Blanchon all around it looking like someone with too much Ambre Solaire.

Like you, I need a detailed project book as to what I put on which floor !
If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.

Reading( between the lines of) the MSDS it looks a lot like Briwax.

I’m no expert but it does not look, smell nor feel like Briwax. As far as I can tell there is no wax in it, certainly not Toulene.
