I'm disappointed too Ian. We have a son in San Francisco who we haven't seen for 18 months, and he's desperate to get home to see family. I think the problem is that whilst their vaccination programme is every bit as advanced as ours, the underlying infection rate is still relatively high by a factor of 10 when measured by cases per 100k.

It doesn't help that on the USA 1-4 tier system, the UK is graded at 4, the same as Brazil or India. Even if we decided to go ourselves and self isolate on our return, we wouldn't be allowed into the USA at the moment anyway.

Yesterday's press conference was a farce. At no stage did Shapps list those countries that are on the Green list, and it was down to the newscaster to quickly gabble off the list just before the programme ended. Oz, New Zealand, Singapore and Brunei won't accept visitors. Who wants to go to the Falklands and South Georgia in the middle of their winter? The only realistic holiday destination is Portugal - the rest are just there to make up numbers. The Faroes require you to have "a special worthy purpose" to be allowed to visit, St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristn da Cunha have a mandatory 14 day quarantine period on arrival. Hartlepool anyone?

Do the same regulations cover entry to the UK by residents of other countries or are there separate rules for that? I live in Finland which is on the amber list. The rules for UK residents taking a holiday here are clear enough regarding testing and quarantine on their return, but I am unsure if those are the rules I would have to comply with if I were to visit the UK.

Don’t run Hartlepool down! Classic knee jerk from folks who have never been there.
It’s quite a nice place and pleasant countryside five minutes away.
Ok there are pockets of deprivation, but not any different to any town of a similar size.

Sorry to jump on you but I am a bit cheesed off with the media comments over the past few days mainly from folks from the south.

My only link with Hartlepool, is that I have worked there in the past and found folks very friendly.

Not sure, but it would be illogical.

Apparently there will be a review every three weeks, hopefully the green list will be longer next time.

The rules are explained here. As a visitor from a country on the amber list, I would expect that to mean that you would have to self isolate at the address you give on your passenger entry form, and to follow the rules on testing. A clear test after 5 days might mean that the period of self-isolation could end there. That's what our son expects to have to do if he chooses to travel from the USA.

Whoa! I only chose Hartlepool as it's been in the news, and of course as a southerner we all know "it's grim up north" (said he quenching the flames with petrol. Joke!). I quite agree with you. Having spent a happy week a fews years ago when we actually had a life, walking the St Oswald's Way from Lindisfarne down the Northumbrian coast to Hexham, we spent several days near Durham, taking in Hartlepool, before moving on to the The North York Moors, Whitby and Staithes. It is a lovely area with fabulous countryside and friendly people. It's high on the list for a staycation again for walking and e-biking.

1. the area around hartlpool is stunning.
2. a staycation is staying at home, not staying the UK. Some of us prefer to holiday here instaed of abroad, simply becuase the UK is a stunning place (i also spent the past 13 years travelling for work).

That's a fair old route Roger you passed fairly close to me between Felton to Rothbury, should have given me a wave. :)
The coastal route directly east from me going north is absolutely stunning if you get some reasonable weather but don't tell anyone. :eusa-shhh: we try to keep it for ourselves.

No offence taken Lurker  and I would be mortified if any had been given. Never my intention I assure you. I guess it's a throwback to my time in the services where we would take the wee wee out of anything that moved, and as such we had to be prepared to take it as well.

It was fabulous Lons! About 95 miles as I recall, and we actually stayed one night in The Anglers Arms nr Felton, and the following night in "The Springfield" in Rothbury. The Italian Bistro across the road was outstanding, and The Greenfield Bakery provided one of the best packed lunches we've ever had. Mind you, we did get "dumped on" from time to time. All a bit "Off topic" I know, but just to confirm that despite being a southerner by birth, I do love the north-east. For those who don't know it, this is typical of the countryside up there, in this case passing by Alnmouth.

I was born in Hartlepool - actually in the same house as a man who later became infamous as a vanishing canoeist! At the time the property was divided into flats and with the Hartlepool United goalie living below us. Apparently he used to babysit me, although my father always insisted that only his wife should ever pick me up.

Dad supported Sunderland.

I used to stay in a hotel about three doors away.
At least 20 nights per year at one time.
The company procurement always asked why I stayed in a cheap hotel but it was clean and the folks friendly.

It will be well before your time but my wife was friendly with the wife of the Hartlepool captain in the early 70s and we socialised regularly I remember their small flat in Hartlepool rent free from the club he said was the only perk he managed to get. His name was Bill Green, moved on to captain Carlisle then a big move to West Ham but his career cut short by injury, we lost touch when they moved and last I heard he was chief scout for Southampton and sadly died a few years ago.

Who is this Sunderland you mention? :eusa-naughty: Weren't they in the premiership once upon a time? ;) I'm a lifelong NUFC supporter in case you hadn't guessed.

Hartlepool

Our visit in 2003 was for a wedding and we were booked in at Sedgefield

This is direct from our travel log that I kept. We were with some distant family and friends and driven around by other invitees also staying in Sedgefield.

"Friday 8 August 2003
Sunny & hot
Late breakfast
Drive to Durham. Park at the station
Walked through town
Explored Durham cathedral in & out
Castle entrance only, next tour was much later
Drove to Blackwall beach. What beach?? All pebbles and stones
Drove to Hartlepool Marina. Locks to let boats in & out
Dinner at Dun Cow Inn with family & friends (expensive GBP13 each) Poms just cannot cook!
"

Regarding the expensive dinner - starter which in SA would have been sent back to the kitchen. Mains some veg and chicken - tasteless. Desert tasteless.
Coffee? Not included in the price!
Beer expensive. Cheaper to buy across the road at a shop.

After the wedding we pushed off on our own and toured Scotland for 9 days and then went to Barcelona for a week.

I do have some colour photos in a box ..............

Do you mean this one at Weldon Bridge Roger? It's less than 5 minutes from me, off the main road next to the river and has an old rail carriage as part of the restaurant. Buildings are old, creaky and quirky, the owners are friends have a reputation for serving good food.

As an aside, my son's hobby is landscape photography and he has an extensive library of Northumbria photos if anyone is interested. https://northphoto.co.uk/

That's the place Bob. I remember it as being a little tired, but very comfortable. I also learned that when it comes to Yorkshire Pudding, they were completely out of our league!

Ah.......all vegetables nuked out of existence !! I can taste the sogginess from here.

Nice Yorkie-pud, though. Best Yorkshire pud I've ever had was at The Flappit near Haworth. Not quite as Great Wall of China as yours, Roger, but sufficient...filled with gravy and beef. Vegetables incidental.

Not as soggy as it looked Roger, although not exactly "al dente". There was a generous helping of roast beef in there too. I was well happy with it after a long day's walk.

They have fishing rights on the stretch of the Coquet in front and I've spent many a happy hour there catching a few trout.
It's an 18th century coaching inn so I guess anything 300 years old would be a bit tired, in estate agent speak it has character. :)
I spent 2 weeks a number of years ago cladding and refurbishing the kitchen and all the prep room walls with polypropylene sheet, only 2 of us working, we couldn't start until 11pm and worked overnight to keep the kitchen open for business, we got a meal on the house every night before starting which wasn't always to be recommended, unfortunately 6 months later they had a serious kitchen fire which destroyed all the good work.
The owners John and Julie have a big old farmhouse just up the road and I was there for months putting in oak flooring, kitchen, 5 bathrooms and loads of other stuff, that place was "quirky" as well, clearly built before spirit levels were invented.
