3 days with no internet nor phone

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

3 days with no internet nor phone

Postby Andyp » 03 Sep 2021, 19:01

Some ejit in a tractor took out the overhead cable at the end of our road on Tuesday, Still no eta.
No land line & no internet.
No 4g , not even 3g just H+ whatever that means. DATA is so slow that online payments time out before completion. Takes 5 mins to load this forum. Data only sim would be pointless.

No decent TV, no decent Radio. Kids just started back at school and need access to online school stuff.

Jeez we rely on the web so much.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

In over-simplified terms, it's 3.5G - an improvement on 3G but not so much to be called 4G. In theory it'll go up to 42Mbit/s, but obviously that's dependent on signal strength and whether the network is overly congested because everyone's Internet connection is down so they're trying to use it for everything.

An Internet connection really has become an essential utility these days, but the regulation hasn't really caught up to that. If that were your power cable taken down they'd be on it a fair bit quicker because they'd have to, and especially with the way schools are now people do rely on it almost as much as power.

That's really bad news, Andy, especially with the kids and school. I know how you feel as we had our cable cut last year and that also took time.

But luckily for us, as you know, I've swapped mobile provider and so the 4G dongle works well. To be honest, the 4G signal is a little borderline and I see that I'm back to 3G at the moment. If the main connection went down, I'd probably bring the router elsewhere in the house to get a good 4G signal.

Only got E on the data signal this morning. Dial up was faster
Went to my daughters flat last night to buy her a printer to be delivered today.
We are all going there later for a mega interweb download party.

7th day still no eta.
Sitting outside an Ibis hotel with faster interweb than I can get at home on 3g.
Hard to imagine how we ever lived without hi speed Internet.

That's great if you can get 5g. If I could get 4g I'd get one but right now I am on E not even H+. I swear Dial up was faster.

8th day now. Still no ETA.

We told the mayor that the bloody farmer who caused the outage should be held liable.

I can imagine said farmer's indifferent shrug.

Things kicked off two days ago when elderly couple up the road could not phone for a doctor. Our mayor has raised a highest priority alert but still no firm eta.
Will be two weeks tomorrow.

Tried a different hotel for free wifi earlier they wanted room number and check-in ref, the cheek of it :D .

We have our demand for refund of all our data charges all ready but have to register the request online!

You guys and gals don't know how lucky you are when it comes to customer service.

If you know where the farmer damaged the line, is it not possible to do a jury rigged temporary repair yourselves?

It's an overhead cable. Possibly multi-paired...tricky job ..especially if they're not colour coded.

had four days last week without landline but the FTTH was OK though ! :D
turns out that a neighbour had cut through 10 pairs of a twenty pair cable whilst trimming the hedge that was growing round the pole. According to Openreach who fixed it the neighbour will get the bill for the repair

Cable sorted this morning. 15 days without land line nor interweb.
I also installed a new router in preparation for the FTTH. That required resitting 11 devices in the home.

Had to look it up Roger,
Whoosh.... way over my head I'm afraid.

The new router came with a wifi extender which I will use upstairs to give the home workers better connection, probably. Although we have never found any wifi dead zones before anyway.

And after extensive tests during tea time the microwave does not interrupt the wifi from the new router.
