What's a prepper?

I had to look up the meaning of 'woke' last week and it still doesn't make sense.

Preppers are the people convinced that the total collapse of civilisation is imminent, and so they're stockpiling everything they think they'll need to survive alone in the post-apocalyptic wilderness... and none of the things they'd actually need in that situation.

Thanks for that explanation! Are they really holed up in a bunker somewhere?
When you think about it..... end of the world as we know it...........makes perfect sense.

I think you find that having a stockpile of 300 tins of beans and a longwave radio is essential in an end of world scenario thank you very much. I keep them in my underground bunker along with a 4 season sleeping bag and a collection of porn mags.

ventilation? no, I don't want that in my bunker, the bugs and stuff might get it. parp parp.

I actually know a prepper. Slightly bonkers hoarder is a more suitable term (sadly). She is quite obsessed by it and much of it is entirely irrational in that it does not address the most likely scenarios if the things she is fearful of occur.

My then partner and I used to live in Switzerland and I still have links to the place so to speak. We lived along the lake just outside Zurich and our house had a basement with a large purpose built nuclear blast bunker, with proper ventilation. These bunkers are relatively common in Switzerland and in some Cantons I believe there was a requirement to have several in each area of new build. Our friends over the road also had a bunker, but their house was further up the hill and the bunker was deeper.

We occasionally had a philosophical discussion, possibly lubricated by some whisky, about whether it is better to shelter from the blast or simply embrace it.

I can understand being prepared for reasonably probable events. But mostly, in a complex society, we humans have little real option but to go with the flow and embrace change as it happens.

We were coming up for an almost complete global mass extinction caused by the weight of ice building up at the poles which causes Earth crust displacement. Good old global warming saved us from that lol. Ian

It isn't just a possibility, it's virtually a certainty. The only uncertainty is when. There have been 6 major glaciations in the last half a billion years. A few tins of baked beans aren't going to keep anyone alive very long when no crops can be grown.

We could actually have a European-only ice-age as a result of climate change and a warming planet. The gulf stream is driven by temperature and salinity differences, and as we warm, it weakens. It has weakened considerably in the last few decades. We could one day have the bizarre situation of frozen seas and iced-up ports in Europe (remember we are on the same latitude as Vladivostok) whilst the globe shows it's warmest average temperatures since records began.

Mess about with planetary systems at your peril......

I didn't post about survivalists, but about the fact that his suppliers of all his products including those of the "normal" stuff he sells are resigned to the fact that the logistics chain will take 2 years to return to anything like normal and that an 40' ISO is now $28K (£20K). All this on top of the cluster fluck the blond bombshell and his "pals" are making of things do not bode well for those at the bottom like me.

I have already noticed that from the "allowance" I get while on the biff with the DWP and unable to go out and actually do a proper job until I'm totally better and they actually carry out a review of my status (more on this later), even with the currently increasing amount of empty shelving I am starting to need to leave some of the items I went to get as the prices have increased to the point that I can't buy all the items on my list that are actually there. This is a bit worrying as I can't just buy whatever is there, I have a severely restricted pallet with regard to ingredients due to my condition. So basically, I have to make just about everything from scratch including any pasta, pastry and bread. Even the types of veg and fruit I can eat is massively curtailed. During the lockdown we were in receipt of the government food parcels and we had to get them stopped as 80% of the pre-packaged and ready made stuff they included was inedible to me. Still that's by the by

On the being able to get working, been informed that DWP can't change my status currently as due to covid they are not carrying out any status health assessments for the foreseeable so will have to wait until they do. But They are looking into putting me through C+E Class 1 which I had asked about doing previously as a way back into working with a more limited amount of physical contact. so we shall wait and see

Clearly my mother was way ahead of her time, we are still using her stockpiled cleaning products 13 years after her death  though the Jif has become a little lumpy.
She must have envisaged an awful lot of cleaning needing doing after civilisation crumbled.

Getting back to MikeG's important comment: if "The Alantic Conveyor" a.k.a. 'Gulf Stream' stops, we are in for a rough time. Think Alaskan climate, but rapidly. That means Polar Bears in Aberdeen? Given that they already inhabit islands off Norway and the reach of sea ice will be dramatically pushed southwards.

If DickM is reading this thread, I'd love to hear HIS take on the reports on the weakening of the current; significant over the last 5-10 years.

The nearest I got to this prepping lark was my panic purchase / hoarding of two bars of Lindt cognac chocolate at the start of the first lockdown. It worked well as a strategy, so I think I might be future proof if anything dramatic happens.

Yes, it's going to go sooner or later, isn't it? The good news is that nobody can predict when. A few years back the bottom of a lake in the area rose a couple of meters and then went back down again. At the time I thought that pretty alarming.

However, the only sensible response involves stocking up on corned beef, dried lemons and Lindt cognac chocolate, although I would add a couple of dozen bottles of decent wine.
