I don’t know how some folks sell stuff so cheap but I’m glad they do. I bought a branded pocket hole drill the other day for £5.95 delivered. Retail price for these is 13.99 plus postage of course. I was so impressed with this drill bit, it’s even laser engraved with depth markings, that I’ve ordered another one. I was going to grind a couple of my own but it’s not worth it. Another well known manufacturer wants £21.78 for one of these bits.

I have always been wary of this pocket hole malarkey as it seemed to be a big outlay if it turned out to be something that I could not get on with.

However I have just bought this for just shy of £7 delivered.
Think it probably needs the proper drills but the parts supplied look decent quality.
The blue thing is a machined aluminium block that’s threaded to take the drill guides.

The proper pocket hole bits have a pilot to guide the screw at the right angle. If you’re careful though I guess other types may work ok?

Ive got one if them. First time i used it, one of the drill guides sheared in half.

Pocket hiole joinery is the work of the Devil. And I am in league with the Devil. Not often, of course, but when I am, it is a good deal :)

PHJ is as ugly as sin, but IN THE RIGHT CONTEXT it is a superb way of building furniture that works well and looks good. It is also great for making large piece that need transproting. I made my wardrobe with PHJ and I really don't see how else I could have got it into my bedroom.

The secret, IMO, is to keep all the ugliness on faces that are not seen - the undeside of the bottom, the top of the top, the outside of internal faces and the back of backs. As long as it's all hidden away, it's fine by me.

Woo Hoo, I ordered 20 brass socket set screws from China on eBay a couple of weeks back and they sent me 21!

I’m quite a way through my project using pocket hole screws and I’m impressed with the rigidity, particularly with having pockets on both sides with thicker material. I had intended to use glue as well but I’m not going to bother now.
