My current tarrif ends at the end of the month. My supplier, EDF has NO fixed price tariffs available right now, it is just Standard Variable. There was one earlier today, which vanished between me starting the process and me finishing it. The cheapest fixed tarrif I can find is more than double the amount I have been paying hitherto!
Does anyone have a Refer a Friend code for Britisg Gas?

Many companies give you a code to share with a friend. If they switch, you both get £50, or some such. I don't know if BG do it, but many do.

Prices have gone nuts. I've been stuck as my supplier went into administration and I was told I had to wait for the supply to be set up with appointed company before changing. Gave up last month and changed and glad I did. Still my price has gone up by nearly 60%!

I always use this site for comparisons, it can be set to warn you when there is a better deal, thoroughly recommend it. It's a pain having to change all the time but this makes it easier

It's the same gas and electricity but I don't like paying more than I have to. The companies take advantage and penalise you for not moving. You may know already but the regulator is raising the cap on SVR tariffs next month so expect a £140 per year raise on top of the increases due to energy costs.

I'm with Bulb and they do (or did - not checked) the £50 referral thing. I CBA to check myself but just wondering how BG rates compare. Everywhere seems expensive last time I looked a few weeks ago.

Bulb claimed they would stay competitive and only have 1 month notice from the start.

last time I checked I used quidco compare as they give you cash back when you switch. Bulb seemed similar to companies you have heard of rather than the unknowns.

Off at a tangent……

There was a fire at the place were the power line comes ashore from France yesterday.
Wholesale lecy price rose by 18% as a result.

I'm currently on 12 month fix with AVRO.
just looked on Martin Lewis energy saving club to find

"You're currently paying £961/yr on your fixed tariff.
Your deal ends on 31 Dec 2021, when you'll pay £1,268/yr."
Thats 32% increase

However the cheapest switch is with EON which is 39% more than I'm currently paying.
The next best fix is 94% up for a 12 month fix!!

So unusually it looks like staying put might be my best option for a bit.
Perhaps ride out the storm on variable tariff and zero exit fee and look regularly to make a jump is any good fixed deals come up.
I'm mainly on free renewables this time of year and the fix goes on to 31/12 so I'll have about 4 months on std tariff before paid for consumption drops and I'll start looking then.

I've just switch. Thanks, Jim.
The price I've signed up for is more than double what I have been paying and actually went up between me initiating this thread and completing the order. It's going to be 17.9% of my monthly income.

It's the leccy what does it. I cook all electric and I have 3 freezers. So for my little house I'm now being quoted £136pcm in total.
I think that yesterday's fire has sent all the suppliers into a tizzy, and I can't see things getting better, ever.

This thread has got me poking around as an experiment.

Based on my current (haha!) deal, it is cheaper to switch to a 12 month fix than a variable tariff which seems very strange even though both have zero exit fee.

So it seems the market would rather use implied inertia to keep me in for a 12 month deal even though I can get out without penalty than have a variable deal where they are at no risk and can hike the price when they want/need to but I can still walk away without penalty.

If there is one thing worse than navigating this minefield as a customer it must be the people who work for the supplier devising fixed tariffs (and pulling them when they get too many leaping on board) in the hope of attracting business.

Back to woodwork I think!

Curious about the fire. According to this http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/
There is still about 0.5GW coming over from France via the interconnect?

Out of interest just checked my consumption and costs.
Past 12 months consumed 8669kwh
Total cost, converted to gbp £1409 or £117 per month
We do have a dual tariff, cheaper overnight for water heating, dishwasher and washing machine.

4 bed detached, water heated by lecky for a family of 1 bloke and 3-4 women, the oven is lecky as is supplementary heating (log burner does most of winter heating).

Seems to me that is not so expensive.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

That's a cracking link, matt. Just tried it and the quote to renew when my current one expires is not that much above the current one.

A neighbour told me that when switching if moving to a new higher tariff he inflates the final meter reading being given to the supplier he is leaving and effectively prepays for some electricity at the lower rate. Alternatively if the tariff is moving in the opposite direction he deflates it and then settles up with the new provider.

Jeez, what a palaver.
First of all, apologies to Jim.

I signed up with BG. Then I saw the Martin Lewis link. Now I have an account with him, so I don't really understand why I didn't find this earlier. But I have found a quote from Sainsbury's, same data, and it's £20 a month cheaper. Still a helluvalot more than I've been used to, of course. Also Fixed with no exit charges, which could be handy if I do decide to move. Don't ask.

And so, just hours after signing up with BG, I've had to email them to cancel. Autoresponder - "We'll get back to you within 3 days". THREE DAYS????

This process has taken all day. I've achieved nothing else.

Keep an eye on your bank account and assuming BG have not got back to you before accepting your cancellation, as soon as you see a DD from BG cancel it pronto.

That will stop them in their tracks.
