Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Pedant's paradise

Postby RogerS » 28 Nov 2021, 11:20

Q. What is the maximum width allowed between the uprights (or spindles) on a staircase in the UK?

A. If you said 100mm then you'd be wrong. The Regs say that a 100mm dia sphere should not be able to pass through. So really, the maximum distance should be a tad less than 100mm

Quite a bit less than 100mm if they're shaped.

I took note of the 100mm ball rule when I did our stairs. Combined with the 900mm height, they look rather close. It is also interesting to figure out the exact maximum spacing when they are turned, and on the slope ...

They thought about that and specify a sphere. Not sure what shape spheres are down your way, Phil ? :D

My American and I are both word nuts, delight in finding new ones. Doesn’t happen as often as you might imagine! Surprisingly we don’t argue about English /American differences.

None taken, I soon learnt to use the appropriate word depending where I am.
Still at least three times a week I have to ask her to rewind and slow down, it’s the waiters rattling off the specials in restaurants that get me every time! And some of those restaurants can be so up themselves with regard to ingredients, and I’m sure they make a lot of things up, I shall have to keep a diary- maybe a video one so y’all can enjoy it! Ian

All restaurants are up themselves to a degree.

Two common things that irritate me are…

Pan fried….well what else are you going to fry it in?
Sea bass, well unless you’re outside of Europe it’s not going to be a freshwater one is it?

Pan fried is instead of deep fried I expect.

'Home ripening' gets me. I've yet to find any fruit that actually ripens in the home.

I do recall when at a sales kick-off in America, us Brits had a competition to see who could go into the local deli sandwich shop and specify the sandwich in such detail that the server had no more options to offer. It took us three days IIRC. :D

Bananas and avocados definitely ripen in our house.

Home harvested slightly green tomatoes will too (not kept in fridge).

My pet hate with chefs and TV cooks ( am addicted to TV cookery and also to cook books) is the creeping wide use of "off". So they will sauté off some onions, fry off some meat to colour it, dry fry off some spices to toast them. Off is always superfluous in this context. They also now put dishes "through" the oven, as if there is a door on both sides.

The widespread inability to differentiate correct use of I and me bugs me.
Ignorant and incorrect use of decimate and disinterested does too.

I can't even claim I got out of bed on the wrong side today, as I am still in it. Frosty outside you see and the indoor job is tiling :x

But bananas seem to go from green directly to black, without going through the yellow phase. This is a good thing, by the way, because the inevitable outcome is banana loaf.

'Specially curated' is another one. About as pretentious as it can get. What's wrong with 'chosen'.

I was with a French colleague in a sandwich shop in the UK and he asked for some peculiar concoction, specifying what he wanted in great detail. The server's only comment was: "hmmm ... must be pregnant". She probably used the same line several times a day but it made me smile.

“Gifted” is one that get me.
Probably not wrong but it just grates.

Oh and just for a laugh a local village that is twinned with a village in England has just invited me to help with their english conversation classes. Me  . My MIL speaks better english than what I do. Regularly beats me at scrabble although using a french set for English words helps ;)
