OSX 10.11.6 upgrade to OSX 10.13

Postby Andyp » 16 Dec 2021, 09:15

I can't put it off any more.
My ageing late 2009 mac wants an OS upgrade. As far as I can see the 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo is 64 bit and I've 294gb of storage still free.

Anyone actually using Office for Mac 2011 on High Sierra?
I know that it is not officially supported but does it work? Google results vary.

TIA
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Yes mate, I’m on 10.13.6 and using Office for Mac 11 and it’s absolutely fine and has been for a few years. I’ve started getting pop ups to say it will stop being supported soon but I think that’s just they aren’t patching Office any further rather than it not working on 10.13.

Thanks Mark,
Just awaiting advice on whether to upgrade the genealogy software (Reunion Touch) before or after the OS. Then buck up the courage to do it.
I’d like to get another year or two out of the iMac before replacement.

I’m the same mate, mine is a mid 2010 and right now it’s doing everything I need it to. I’m loathe to buy another yet as mine was one of the ones you could easily upgrade yourself so I’ve got 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD in mine but to buy that spec from Apple would bankrupt me.

I’ll drag this one along for as long as possible and right now it’s doing everything I need. The problems will come when phone and iMac IOS stop talking to each other and tools I use a lot cease to sync between the two, then I’ll be forced to look at it.

Our old iMac is still soldiering on. I might have bought one of the new iMacs but I wasn’t impressed with the paucity of outputs. I’m still thinking about a Mac Mini. Lots of new Apple stuff coming out next year, maybe something will temp me? Good luck with the upgrade, our last one went fine.

:eusa-clap: :text-+1:

While it still does what's required there's absolutely no need to upgrade. You've just got too much spare moolah with that MoD pension Roberto! :eusa-whistle:

I'm making do with 12gb RAM, which I upgraded to but I forget from what. Perhaps I will look around to upgrade the 2 x 2GB modules :eusa-think:

My 21.5” is restricted to 16gb max. So probably not worth the effort.

I want High Sierra for VPN software that wont run on anything older. Will do the upgrade then see how the memory copes.

I'm not sure that's right Andy, my 27" says the same in the official apple specs, but Google told me different and Google was right, mine could take double. I think the original specs were based around the IOS at the time not being able to reference more rather than a physical limitation, but tbh if you're happy with how it runs on 12 then you probably don't need any more.

OK Mark, thanks. Will investigate further.

I guess you have four slots with 8gb in each? I have 2x 4gb and 2x 2gb at present.

Any particular reason for the VPN and which one are you going for?

I'm only a hard up pensioner :D but we bought ours from JL on interest free over 36 months. Last time SWIMBO looked, they didn't appear to have any more green ones. Our old one was broken in any case and was only fit for the dump - Rob

Yes.
I am in France. Geolocation, expecially post Brexit, bars me from certain areas of interest. I have a paid for VPN , PIA, on the iPad, that works well. The app for the iMac will only run on High Sierra or above.

As well as the financial cost, please give a thought to the use of resources, and the mountains of electronic waste we produce. Although quite a bit is collected for "recycling", the amount that is actually meaningfully recycled is small. This is how electronic waste is recycled in Guiyu, China:

Look in apple, about this mac and what is the model name under there? It will tell you when it's released, mine says - iMac (27"-inch, Mid 2010).
