OSX 10.11.6 upgrade to OSX 10.13

But you might not need extra memory. Just a thought...could you retrofit an SSD ? Apple manages memory very well and swaps stuff to and from the 'hard' drive as and when. An SSD would be much faster.

What memory do you require ? We have two elderly Macs here of similar vintage and they will be recycled sooner or later and maybe I have inside them the memory that you seek ? You could try eBay for the memory as well. Or try MacUpgrades in the UK who are very good.

Thanks Roger.

I find it hard to believe that an OS upgrade will not, in some way, put more demands on the memory. Of course the OS upgrade will not cost me anything and as a last resort the iMac is about ready for replacement anyway.

MacUpgrades do have some 4gb in stock (https://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/products/819) I’ll have a look closer to home before you start cannibalising your kit.

Did you get my email with the spec OK ?

I have heard that often Apple put improvements inside the OS at each upgrade that minimises memory requirements. So you may be OK.

My MacMini upgrade from Catalina to Big Sur made a huge difference on memory use. I'd been running with Activity Monitor open before the upgrade and the improvement was quite tangible.

It might be useful to run with Activity Monitor open for a couple of days to see what the memory is being used by.

My most hungry user is the verification thingy 'fsck_hfs' for Time Machine backup - 1.01gb.

No email received Rog.

I dont want the iMac to go belly up this side of christmas so will wait to upgrade the OS until the new year. I also need to make sure that I have the right version of my backup software (carbon copy cloner) which I think I should upgrade before doing the OS upgrade. Just waiting to hear back from them.

Interestingly I'm pondering upgrading my OS over Christmas to Big Sur and then Monterey.

I know you’re a fan but I can honestly say, as much as I like apple and prefer my Mac to my PC now, I haven’t had a single OSX upgrade that hasn’t been better after I gave up and did a clean install and restored my data.

It works, but it doesn’t work properly or anywhere near as well as it should. And that’s from a paid up apple devotee.

Not to hand, last time I did it I googled and found a link to create the necessary usb boot drive (that was a pain in itself because for some unknown reason not all USB sticks will work). You then just follow a process to boot up to the stick, formate the drive then it installs from the stick.

The hardest parts were creating to boot USB (I had to do it on a pc as it wouldn’t work from my iMac!!) and reinstalling the data because it wouldn’t recognise my TM so I had to regress OS, back up data manually, reinstall new then manually copy data back. M
Even after all that faff it was still easier than getting an ‘upgraded’ version of the OS to run well.

Just make sure you’re prepped with backups of all your data.

OK MDS_stores has finished.

Will have to run with it for a few days weeks before I will be convinced. A wee anomaly when trying to save scanned documents (something we do an awful lot of) . There is no file name box! :o

I can gate around it by Printing to PDF but that's a PITA.

Can you shrink the size of that save box by grabbing a bottom corner?

yes I can Mark but the File Name box is still not there, very odd.
I can do a File, Print, Save as PDF but that is long winded.

I'll google it later.

Ah my mistake, it looked initially like the save box was extending up behind the menu bar of the window, but that’s another window behind isn’t it!

Mark, did you simply backup Macintosh HD to save your data ?

That's what I do.

Doesn't look like I will have to do a clean install yet.
New HP software solved the earlier problem.

Made sure I had copies of the installers for any apps I wanted. Backup up the photos library to a separate drive. Backed up my documents directory of anything in there that wasn’t on my NAS and that was it.
