For anyone who thinks they need a bigger bandsaw...

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

For anyone who thinks they need a bigger bandsaw...

... this little video may provide some food for thought, as it features a sizeable ride-on model!

It's really about how pleased they are that France has some fantastic oaks 12 or 13m long and also has the equipment and skilled people to handle them. That's about all I could pick up, but I expect some of our Francophone members can add a bit more detail.

Thank you.

I think we might have some of a similar size down here. This is, I think, an 8m log at Luton Sawmills, and I'm sure this was on their shorter of their two mills.

And I think this is the longer.

They supplied the cladding for my workshop and the log came from Longleat.

I used to live in SW France.....
We had a big plot by UK standards, with our own wood......
I was reg down at the local sawmill to get tree's sliced up....
Huge long trees hanging out the back of my tractor trailer combo.....nobody seemed to think this was anything but normal....hahaha......
Generally where we lived there was a sawmill in most villages.....
a 1 man band kinda thing and u were expected to help out with the lifting.....
My place was run buy an old almost fingerless drunk.....
I nice interesting guy when sober......Brandy and home brew was the order of the day....every day...hahaha....
after lunchtime nobody stirred....bit like the mouse....lol....
I was the crazy English bloke who wouldn't drink......
anyway,
I wish I had taken some photo's of his place/machinery......a true wonder....
up to your knees in wood dust n bits of bark....
Most of the saw bench and bandsaw head looked like a Victorian cast iron work of art .....
all filigree casting, Bit like and old Eng steam pumping house.....
it was pretty much clapped out along with the building is was used in....
actually everything was worn out.....even the forklift had no brakes and needed to be jump started....
chunks of oak on chains was used as chocks for the wheels/hand brake...not helped by the yard being on a slope....!!!
the whole machine was driven off one of the hubs from an equaly old tractor.....
a big long flappy flat belt went 1/2 the length of the barn.....
all very dangerous.....
but they could sure cut up tree's fast....the actual blade was a carbide tipped jobby.....
I had never seen one in the flesh before... at least 3-4inches wide....
so I guess with a 40 HP tractor driving it all nothing slowed the blade down.....

Shame of it will be come the day this will all go for scrap......
Now when u consider the new machines around like WoodMiser etc they all seem a bit plasticky....

Sorry but I'm a lover of old machines....

I did get to use and big old Hydraulic press at a smithies there....prob before 1900.....
this time I had my phone but the owner refused to let me take a photo...!!!!!!.
still think it would be nice one to own.....I'd happily swop my 25 ton press for his and give him a few bob as well......
My motto for years has been Old cars, even older houses n machines but younger women....hahaha...
Happy New Year to u all........

As far as I can tell the mill owner is saying that the price of oak has gone through the roof as a result of the Notre Dam fire he is raking it in. :)
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

The chap in this video says that France is the second largest producer of oak in the world!

Very interesting video, especially for what it says about bringing young people into the profession.

I think if an opportunity like that had presented itself to me when I was leaving school in the mid 60s, I would have taken it. All that was offered was a 5 year apprenticeship in the timber trade.

Click on the 'CC' button on the foot of the YT screen. Then click on 'settings'. Select 'Auto Translate' and then select 'English'. I believe it has been properly translated, not 'auto translated', but by a Frenchman/woman. ;)
