Gridwatch ..why electricity is so expensive

That begs the question of whether the human race will be around in 10,000 years. Personally, I don't think with current 'progress' :eusa-whistle: we'll see the next millenium, let alone ten of them - Rob

I was interested to note that today France has a demand of around 75GW compared to 45GW for the UK. This does not reflect the population sizes which are more or less the same, can anyone explain why ?
Cheers !

Whilst the population of France maybe similar to UK, the land area is several times greater (too lazy to look up the factor!) So I could imagine distribution losses could be much higher in France.

I don't know how domestic heating is done in French towns that do have gas piped in? Lots of folk live in flats so little room for oil tanks so that may use more electricity.
Rural France has no gas and relies on a mix of oil and wood for heating.
Whilst France has some wind generation but they seemed slow to adopt solar on house roofs compared to UK.

Huge landmass in France so tends to be colder away from the coasts.

That would be my explanation. In my limited straw poll of friends and family most of us are on electricity for heating and hot water. I think lecky prices are a fair bit cheaper here too.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Absolutely. All those lovely nuclear reactors and no reliance on gas at hugely increased prices.

There seems to be increasing interest in Home Batteries like the Tesla Powerwall.

I had a chat with someone yesterday who is using his EV as a battery for his solar panels on his house.
I asked him how that impacted on the warranty for his EV battery and he claimed it made no difference.
To be honest this sort of use must increase the number of charge discharge cycles and so affect battery life.

Does anyone with EVs know the details of their battery warranty terms. Is it in terms of mileage, no of years and what about use as home solar battery?

I don’t have one but from what I’ve read it’s 7 or 8 years. From what I understand ultra fast charging is more damaging to current lithium batteries? Home chargers seem much slower so perhaps not an issue in this case. There is, or was a trial here on V2G charging and it all seemed positive apart from the cost of installation. In this case it was free to those in the trial.

To my thinking, if we are going to be paying EDF (thus the French government) to build and operate reactors, why not just install a thicker cable and buy the power from France and let them have the reactors there, we end up reliant on them in any case, and if the glaciers advance we will be upstream of the waste ....

Seems that there are quite a few cables in place already and more planned.

Latest cable has just been refused perhaps on the basis that the company running it is Russian.
