air fed masks

Postby wallace » 25 Jan 2022, 09:04

You all know I like to mess about with the odd bit of paint. I have always been a stickler for ppe and use a powered respirator whenever in my shop. When spraying I use a sundstrom rubber mask with appropriate filter. I have grown a decent amount of face fluff in the last 6months and understand this can interfere with good sealing and so protection being compromised.
Is anyone clued up on air fed masks. I found a mask and 3 stage filter on ebay, but it looks a bit janky to me.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185002778037?

There is also a devilbus 3 stage filter which looks the business
My compressor is a good 15years old and very well used.

That one I linked to does look very dodgy. I think I would have problems with sealing even if I used a full faced rubber mask.
I think I will look into the updated version of my 3m versiflo, I think you can get filters for use with paints

Don’t even think about an air fed mask unless you have the correct air supply and for that you will pay thousands.

I assume that your current set up is air sucked over a filter by an independent pump. Ie positive air flow, for those a face seal isn’t necessary or indeed helpful.
Then all that you need to worry about is that you are using the correct filters and that the positive air flow is up to spec.

That’s the best system, 3 m website will steer you to the best filters configurations. It’s all down to the paint types you use.

If you have facial hair around you chin longer than 1.5mm it will prevent any western style respirator (those that seal around the jaw and hair line) from making a proper protective seal. You need a schlaeger (soviet) style full head mask that seals around the neck like below

I'm not aware of any commercial types of mask that use this system of sealing. It's either shave or be a prepper lol

My new filter unit arrived, I had to buy a charger and the appropriate filter cartridge, very pleased with the result. I thought 3m had changed the units just to screw more money out of people. The paint filters weren't available for my old filter unit. The new unit is much bigger and has speed control.
I feel sorry for companys that have to supply this stuff to employees, this little lot would of cost £1k from a proper supplier.

I suppose their might be a glut of ppe being flogged off cheap considering the government wrote of a couple of billion pounds of it recently
