Phil Bennett RIP

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Phil Bennett RIP

Postby Andy Kev. » 13 Jun 2022, 07:20

One of the rugby greats has gone.

He was one of that remarkable Welsh team which made watching the Six Nations in the 70s torture for an English kid like me. What a player. And of course there's that try which he played a key part in for the Barbarians against the All Blacks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbwSx-xw_NU Just marvel at what he did in his own 22.

RIP Mr Bennett.

Indeed. We do not see running play like that very often now. A few high tackles in that clip too.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Yep, very sad. He was a brilliant player, with a side-step to die for.

Just a correction, though. "That try" was scored by Gareth Edwards. Bennett started the move on his own try line, but it was Edwards who finished it.

Sorry, yes. I meant just to mention his bit in the 22. I'll correct that.

About the only thing you can say is that they weren't high velocity high tackles!

That's one thing that rugby has got sorted out correctly. Now if they could just get a grip of the put in ...

High tackles when I played as a teenager were practically encouraged by the coaches. Our school first team coach was a nutcase and I think directly responsible for me getting two broken arms  (Same one, twice). Rugby was much more dangerous then and the game has got its act together far more now.
