Suddenly started seeing this ? Is this a browser/OS issue or forum s/w ?
Edit: It's a browser issue. Safari 14.0.1. Bit of a pain. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I don’t view YouTube videos in a browser, I use the YouTube app. I’m assuming though you’re using a desktop, if so try using a different browser. Firefox works fine on the Mac.
I was told many years ago that some websites simply don’t comply with accepted standards so it’s worth having at least two browsers on hand in case you experience unexpected web page behaviour. I rarely use anything other than Safari but I do have a couple of others just in case.

I don’t know what you mean by ‘white space after clips’, got an example?

Safari does indeed have smaller previews, id imagine its to do with how it embeds the youtube link.

It's not the preview window size, although I agree that it is smaller, but more the inches of white space underneath.

I see the same as you but mine is Safari and Chrome, so it's a Safari thing.

I'm finding more and more that browsers are gradually changing their interpretation of websites (or verse visa) and behaving differently on different sites to the extent that I now run two browsers and choose which I use according to the website.
Also the same website will be have differently on a mobile to a laptop even with the same browser
Its a pain
It was rammed into me in the seventies at university the importance of ensuring software portability between platforms. Seems to have gone right out of the window these days.

In fairness Bob, how many platforms were there back in ye olden days compared to now...

I’m not seeing any problem on an iPad running the latest iPadOS.
You don’t need to watch the video in the web page. I don’t, I just click on YouTube and it opens the video in the app. Maybe if you open the video in a new page?

It does not matter. The principle is still valid, code should not rely on special features or quirks of platform hardware or operating system.
About the only relaxation that could perhaps be allowed these days is that the hardware and OS supported could be the last few generations. Not back to beginning of time.
