ANNOUNCEMENT!!! SSL Cert.

Postby TrimTheKing » 13 Feb 2021, 16:26

I'm just about to look at applying the SSL cert to the site now. I can't find any evidence to suggest it will cause issues but I wanted to put a message out just in case, not that you'll be able to see it if the site goes down...

The only bit I'm uncertain about it Tapatalk, but I'll test that as soon as I've confirmed that the main website works okay.

Okay, I've been onto the admin site and requested the SSL certificate but I need to wait for it to be assigned by Digisign now. I will keep an eye out for communications and as soon as it arrives I will do the necessary to assign it to the site and make any changes.

IF for any reason the site goes down when they assign the cert then at least you know why, having hopefully seen this message, and I will get onto it as soon as I see either the cert come through or anything untoward happen.

I have no idea what an SSL cert is, but if it means removing those damn stooopid adverts for tapatalk at the end of every post, then I'm all for it :eusa-clap:

There are ZERO adverts on this forum Bob so assuming you’re talking about adverts within Tapatalk then this won’t change that. The only way you will get rid of those would be to pay for Tapatalk I imagine, but I don’t pay for it and I don’t get any adverts and use Tapatalk on my phone 50% of the time.

Mark, i'm talking about the silly little line at the bottom each post "sent using tapatalk on my (insert phone advert here)"

Nothing to do with the site itself. 8-)

People can choose to get rid of those. When you create a Tapatalk post there is a blue tick at the bottom (see attachment) and if you click that the line doesn’t get posted. If you’re seeing them then that’s because people aren’t clicking that tick.

I don’t think SSL is working yet unless in need to log out and in again.

Unlikely, the forum is only configured for port 80, SSL not installed (or received) yet.

You can still add https (I think) but it will just redirect to http.

In short, SSL is the ‘s’ at the end of https meaning the site is secure and not ‘open’ like http.

To secure it you apply a certificate from a trusted source that gets checked when you go to the site to prove it’s a legit site.

As to how it will affect our site, in reality it won’t but modern browsers are starting to not go to sites that aren’t secure so it just means we stay accessible to every browser.

In terms of functionality it means nothing, but if Mike’s browser is playing up because of the lack of cert then it might help him.

Ah yes, good spot — interestingly the browser is happy to leave it as https, though then padlock doesn’t appear for obvious reasons! Jumped the gun with the transition I think!
