Empty video space on screen

Postby Malc2098 » 10 Oct 2021, 13:56

I've posted a couple of videos, or thought I had, over the last few weeks and just get an empty space on screen where the video should be.

Now, when other people post videos, I'm getting anther empty space.

I'm on a Late 14 Mac Mini. MacOS BigSur v11.6. Safari v15.0

Am I doing something wrong? Or doesn't the platform like my setup?

I think we worked this one out a while ago. There are two youtube buttons, make sure you are using the SSL one otherwise you’ll get this issue.

If you retry posting your video using the SLL button then let’s see if that fixes it. I thought I’d removed the old button but perhaps not…

Mine says youtubeSSL and that's the one I've been using.

But others videos posted are doing the same, like on Trevannion's post I've screen grabbed above.

Yes. But Safari makes it difficult to see whether you are or not. But I've logged out. Closed the tab, opened a new one and typed in https://www etc. Trevannion's post still has a empty space where the video should be.

When I hover over live stuff on the forum screen, it shows https:// etc in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. The 's' is there!

the only apple device I have is my iphone7 and the youtube previews work just fine with safari.
Everything is fine with win 10 on my laptop

For the preview to work your device has to go off to youtube to get the preview without you having explicitly asked it to do so. It occurs to me that you might have some security setting in your os or browser that is preventing it acting on embedded urls without permission.
Might be anti virus or malware blocker?
Some focused googling might provide a clue perhaps

Gents, I've checked those. I've also gone into a video heavy thread like Favourite Listenings, and every one is now a blank space. I haven't consciously changed any settings within Safari over the last few weeks, and it's only this forum that isn't showing the video thumbprint.

Any updates applied lately mate? Nothing’s changed from the forum side and I’m in a Mac and don’t see the same issue so I suspect it’s a browser issue.

You using Safari? Tried any other browsers?

On 21st September, I posted a video in Favourite Listenings. If I use Google Chrome as the Browser, all the videos are visible, including mine.

Safari for some reason is not showing any of the videos anywhere on the forum.

To the best of my knowledge I have not changed any browser or forum settings.

‘Fraid not, that’s just the source code of the page. Why your browser isn’t rendering it properly isn’t on there.

Is that the developer tools men you’re in there?

You have probably have done this already but have you cleared cache & history in Safari? Done a an engineer's reset? ie power off then on again.

I do not have Big Sur, but I can’t replicated the problem on my Mac.

The YT thumbnail is there and working in Google Chrome, it's there in Safari on both my iPad and iPhone. It's just not showing or working on this forum in Safari on this Mac Mini.

I and probably Mark hate to admit defeat on this sort of problem but I think you will agree that this is local issue between operating system and web browser.

For a year or more now I have had a similar issue with my online bank. It prides itself on be 100% secure. So secure that in Firefox (my default browser) I just can't log in. The part of the screen where I select the numbers of my password just does not load. Unlike the technical support here the banks support staff were useless only suggesting I upgrade the OS ( I am on El Capitan), clear cache, history etc . This might work but I will not upgrade the OS, I think my ageing Mac would struggle.

I instead I use Safari just to access the bank. Safari is set so it's home page is Bank's home page.

Might I suggest you do likewise Malc to access WH2? It just might be the only solution, ie use a different browser just for the forum.

Hmmm. Thanks, Andy.

Emptied cache and history, no change, and now no history which I have occasionally found useful.

I had a problem with Rutlands similar to yours you've described, but they were aware and suggested in short term to use a different browser, but they eventually fixed the issue, whatever it was.

I agree it's very local, but I'm loathed to use different browsers for different websites/fora etc.

I had just hoped it had cropped up before and one of you genii would know the fix.

I know how you feel Malc. Not having Big Sur I am not sure if any further testing by me is going to get us anywhere. I've tried playing around with just about all he privacy and security settings without being able to replicate the problem.

Do you use Time Machine Malc? You should be able to regress your browser back to before you cleared the cache to get it all back.

Malc, for what it's worth, I think I also have the same issue on my Mac. I haven't looked into it yet (not that I'll have a clue about how to fix it!).

Safari is getting to be a right PITA TBH. A fair few sites don't function properly. But to get back to your problem...presumably it was OK after you migrated to Big Sur ?

Have you tried the Apple Community on the Apple pages and also Apple's chat support.?

I upgraded to Big Sur a while ago. I uploaded a video less than 3 weeks ago and that went OK. It's most recently that this has happened and I haven't, to my knowledge, knowingly changed any settings, and I can't find any settings that would change it anyway.

I haven't been on the the apple community, but there seems to be similar occurrences on the phpBB community, but they seem to be for people designing forums with that software.
