Very nice indeed. I love the grain but am a bit puzzled trying to read it. I think I can see that the lid is turned spindle style but is the base done the same way, with the visible end grain on one side of it all coming from where there used to be a branch? Was it really just one bit of wood, mounted and turned in one, with the two pieces keeping their original relationship with each other? In the first picture, the grain does seem to belong together but in the second there is more of a colour difference.

I know very little about turning but to me this is extremely attractive. The shape, the grain and the finish are all beautiful.

Actually 3 pieces of wood.

The easy bit:
Terminal finial: spindle turned.
Body and Lid both turned cross grain orientation.

Body and Lid have a relationship, same log but about 110mm separation (scrap very wormy, split and rotten sapwood rich ends.
Left over from using centre section some three years ago. (There's some grain correlation with the first image above)

Thanks Chas. That's even more impressive, seeing the potential in several pieces used together.

When you have a couple of Cu.Mtrs of oddments/off-cuts that have failed to find the firewood bin one's got to do something to try and regain some semblance of control

My goodness that's lovely wood. It reminds me a little of olive wood. Of course, the turning looks first rate to me, but it's Chas.....what else would we expect? :D

Thanks for the comments guys, it's a good job you don't see me making these pieces or the running re-designs that take place in the production.
I doubt my workshop setup or the turning methods used would impress, I'm afraid I'm not into "all that glitters" or "the correct/right way" just interested in walking out of the shop with something that looks presentable after a couple of hours.

I would just be happy to be able to walk out the workshop with anything turned but not while it is like this
