Quick coat of what (?) to give an initial impression

Postby RogerS » 23 Nov 2021, 13:06

I recall someone suggesting wiping down some newly finished wood with something to give an idea of what it will look like when the finish is applied. I can't remember what it was though?

Isopropyl or naptha, Let's you see how it will look when glossy and evaporates without raising the grain

I use white spirit Roger but please test first and check if any residue will affect the final finish.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I usually just use some water from an atomiser. Is white spirit noticeably better?

Like so much of what I do by habit I cannot remember why or when I started to use white spirit. Does it raise grain less than water ?
Like with so many things if it works for you then stick with it.

White spirit evaporates quickly. Raises grain only minimally. I use white spirit too.
Don't like: wood, engines, electrickery, decorating, tiling, laying stone, plumbing, gardening or any kind of DIY. Not wild about spiders either.

I don’t like the smell of White Spirit and you’re never sure of exactly what you’re buying. An old boy told me many years ago it can also leave an oily residue. It’s mentioned here.

I just use water and sand again if required but Isopropyl sounds like a good idea.
