I think I shared this Shaker style oval box before. It's a number 4 sized box. This morning I had a request to make full size patterns for the entire range of boxes. Less than 10 minutes and I had a PDF ready for printing.

I don't get many opportunities to do that so I have to take it where I can get it. :D

I know this is kind of old fashioned for you folks but it's what the client wanted. This will be made out of black walnut with art tiles in the backsplash. I guess that would be splash back on your side of the pond?

First glance I thought you'd cheated and just drawn circular thread patterns but on closer look they do look helical. impressive :)
Don't think I've seen a grease cup before. Obvious how it works from your drawing.

Thanks for keeping on posting these. Not usually got much to comment about them but I do like looking.

I have seen grease cups before, but not that version, used on a lot of old stuff.

Thank you Robert. You're correct, I did model screw threads. No cheating for me. :D

For operating just give it a little turn every now and then. Fortunately things that get lubricated don't seem to use up the grease as fast as they did a hundred years ago.

Dave, I'd just like to echo the appreciative comments about this thread. For a long time I'd not bothered looking at it, as I'm not interested in learning how to prepare drawings on the PC. But then I found that it could just as well be headed "Hundreds of design ideas for things to make" or "how a designer sees the world around him and works out how it goes together." I reckon that in a previous life you'd have been a good pattern maker - you have the knack of seeing what goes in to defining and making a huge range of finished objects. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, gentlemen.

I do enjoy figuring out things like this. Very often I find analogies to real world processes in the way I create the modeling. For shop projects, whether my own or for someone else, it helps me think through efficient workflow in the shop so there's little or no need to repeat machine setups and things can be batched.

A nice little story if you're bored enough to keep reading: After I modeled the hand rail stanchion and its decorative nut (see my post from November 23rd) I got to wondering about the casting process for those parts. A core would be required to make them hollow. I could see that and modeled them as in the second image in that post. I was wondering how that long core would be supported in mold. The core, made of sand couldn't support its own weight if supported only from one end.

I watch the You Tube channel of a fellow who does sand casting in the state of Mississippi. I figured he'd know so I took a long shot and e-mailed him. I figured he'd be busy and probably ignore my e-mail but there was nothing to lose. He did e-mail me back on our Thanksgiving Day. As it turned out he was visiting his wife's family in Iowa and the next day would be passing by here on his way to the Twin Cities to pick up a phase converter for his shop. He and his wife joined us for lunch on their way through. Very nice folks and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting them.

That is very nice :D

I think we have a couple of members who still use equipment like that, no tails, not dependant on power.

Or even an animation with the chips flying?

I'm still in awe of what you achieve with sketchup. I find I use it too rarely and forget what I learned last time.
Most of what I need I can do in visio 2D drawings and recently got my visio technical 2000 running under windows 10.

Thanks Bob.

I thought about animating it and even worked out the treadle and pitman positions but decided I really need to do some work stuff so the animation will have to wait.
