I say Addyrondack but I’ve heard someone else previously pronounce it as Airondack which makes no sense...

I thought I share a thing I've been playing with in my shop lately. Normally I try to suppress my over-engineering tendencies but things being as they are I figured why not let him out to play a little. The idea is a fine screw advance system for the Router Boss.
Image

If you aren't familiar with the Router Boss, it is designed to hold the work piece(s) on a bar that slides left and right when you turn the crank on the top. There are numerous ways to secure the work to that bar but the common way is via a fixed jaw and a cam clamp as shown in the photo below. Then the router can be moved forward or back and plunged. All very simple and it's even safe to use for climb cutting.

Image

Although it doesn't really need it, I got to thinking about a way to make very small, precise adjustments to the position of the work for small pieces. So this uses a 1/4in. dia. by 16 TPI precision lead screw (orange) so one full turn of the crank moves the work 1/16 in. I made a proof of concept mockup the other day although I didn't have the right hardware. It seems to work fine. So the next thing is to bite the bullet and order the stuff. It ain't cheap but I guess it's only money. Of course the non-over-engineering side of me may wake up and beat the over engineer back into submission. :D

Nice idea, followed on it needs a lead screw for the router and then some stepper motors. You now have a CNC machine!

For those who are looking for a way to improve their skills with SketchUp or whatever modeling tools you prefer to use, do a hunt for 'technical drawings' or 'machine drawing' on the Goog. There's loads of free dimensioned drawings you can download. Then set to work drawing from them.

Nice, like that 8-) 8-)

Here is a concept drawing for some folding steps for a guy with a boat. He needs steps so his guests can get on board from his dock and he didn't want the common plastic or GRP kind. He also wanted them to be collapsible so he can stow it when he's away. Still need to add the panels and hardware but the general idea meets with his approval.

Took me a while staring at it to see how it folds but I got there. self retaining when folded too. Clever.

Oops! Sorry. I didn't mean to make it a secret. There's also to be a fabric mesh bottom in the larger section for shoe storage for those who might wish to take off their shoes before boarding.

Here's a quickie I did for a guy whose daughter asked for a bookcase like this. He wanted to make sure that he was on the same page as she was. He said this was it.

I'd go back to school to learn this craft but guess that won't happen....
apart from the design I always fancied a 3D print machine......
never mind....

DaveR... if you are a bit bored I have a very simple (to everybody else) design I am at a brick wall over.
In this picture, I want the shape of the two tallest pieces of wood, with similar curves, but I need to get both pieces out of a 200 mm wide plank. So i need the main one inverted and slightly lower down the plank to keep wastage at a minimum.
The top shelf support needs to be full 200 mm across.
The overall length of the piece needs to be 980 mm and the legs at floor level to be around 60 mm.
Curves can be arranged to reduce wastage.

I'm not copying the whole thing, just the long rear leg.
Pretty please? 8-)

its worked well thanks. i have a mental blindness to 3D thinking and geometry. I can make just about anything from scratch as I go, but this is an expensive plank and I wanted to minimise wastage by having a plan.
