@Phil. Are all of these for gout? Is jy 'n tokoloshe? I actually have a bit of a phobia about taking tablets, I am convinced they all get stuck in my throat and have to eat bread and milk after taking any to make sure they go down. When I was having to take my chemo pils last year it took 45 minutes a 2 pints of milk and 4 slices of toast

Gout, diabetes, under active thyroid, arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure ...

eleven pills in the morning, seven at night. My all time record after an amputation was forty three pills a day.

Sorry Phil Pascoe, I was asking Phil in South Africa. I'm aware of the tabs you have to take from previously (and you have my deepest sympathy for it). It is just the way I read the other Phil's post made it seem that they were all for his gout. And this got me a bit worried, I will suffer a migraine for about 4 hours before I eventually take a pill for it. As a kid I choked on a a boiled sweet and went unconcious and had a passer-by do the Hymlich on me, so have had a really bad phobia about swallowing pills and eating boiled sweets since. I crunch them as soon as I put it in my mouth, never ever suck on them

No, only the first 2.

The other are blood pressure, statins, acid reduction.

Well still laid up and waiting to hear back from the doc as the naproxin pills don't seem to be doing much and the 30/500 Co-codamol don't seem to be strong enough. thought it was getting better on Friday but has just got worse over the weekend. so much so now using a bottle rather that go 9' to the loo.

my foot has swollen so much it looks like a Marrigold:

so i am still laid up on the couch, haven't moved from it in 3 weeks. The gout died off a bit and then came back with a vengence. Have basically been out of it since saturday, taking morphine every 2 hours along with the strongest anti-biotics the doc can give me. he thinks the joint has got infected so...

This has been the worst experience of my life and I've had a couple of doozies. So bad that most of my waking time has been spent crying. Its the fact that it doesn't die down but is just constant. I know now what it is like to be ripped apart as that exactly what my foot has tried to do to itself. Even now if i lower my leg my foot trebles in size and goes from a rather sissy bright shiny pink to a fetid purple in seconds and is agony.

My personal experience of NHS GP's is poor, the "wait and see if it gets better" approach almost cost me an ankle and foot many years ago. That sounds to me way more than gout. Is there any way you can get a private specialist opinion?

On the contrary, my experience has been universally excellent. When I had Prostate Cancer a few years ago, my GP (we’ve met a few times in Waitrose discussing which brews to buy for the weekend and he rides a Moto Guzzi) had me down at the local hospital before you could say ‘knife’. No complaints - Rob

I'm glad you found the good one. I never did in the UK.
UK hospitals though, dont get me wrong, are magnificent at saving lives. Its just the getting past the gp's thats the tough bit.

They’re all pretty good SB, it appears you never found one. I draw the line at a certain Dr. Shipman - Rob

Sounds pretty horrible Droogs.
I has a sore big toe joint at the weekend, her majesty to one look and diagnosed gout and told me to take ibuprofen, it wasn’t too bad, almost better by midday yesterday, then I went fishing, got home ok took off my shoes and it suddenly flared up.
Spent the night in agony, I moved into the spare bedroom as I did not want to disturb her. She came in this morning to ask what was up, so I told her.
She just tutted and said “there’s always something with you isn’t there?” And went to work.
Being married to a medic, you get rapid diagnosis and treatment, but zero sympathy :D

Our GP is really good. When I first spoke to him on the phone about it, he was soo concerned about how i was breathing due to the pain, he was round the flat in 10 minutes. He has tried several cocktails of meds to get it sorted and afterthe first 5 days it seemed like it was. Then it just ballooned in a way I could not have imagined (literally), He felt that it may be infected in the joint and given the swelling and pain he put me on to morphine and double strength antibiotics. He's been round the house every couple of days and in between has the missus phone in how i am. So I think he's done well and I am just unlucky. ~Also I think the fact that I am still recovering from the chemo, hemochromatosis and sclirosis of the liver due to the hct is a big factor

Agree with Lurker above, it does sound bloody horrible, but glad you’ve got a really good GP who’s on top of the issue. Hopefully, it’ll be sorted quickly - Rob

There are undoubtedly other things going on there/ I've had gout (in my younger days when I didn't bother with the allopurinol) probably 15 or 20 times, and it's never lasted more than a few days. The worst I had (I've taken allopurinol religiously since) I got in my left big toe for a few days then it went. It reappeared in the right big toe, then it went. Then the left ankle, then the right ankle, then the left knee, then the right knee. When it went I thought brilliant, that's the end. It was over four or five weeks. Then it came up in my left big toe. I still take allopurinol despite no longer having any feet or ankles.

I'm truly glad you have a good one. The last time I needed a doctor to call at the house my wife was suffering with broken skin between her fingers. She was in so much pain she was tearing her skin with her finger nails and I was having to force her hands apart.
The doctor was not interested in a visit in the slightest.
Until I held the phone next to my wife who was crying and screaming in pain.

She then got treatment and tests to find out what was wrong. It was an extreme allergic reaction to caffine. At the time she was working in a small vending company and handling coffee filling the bottles for the machines, and there was a free vend machine next to her desk. A change of job and decaf coffee for the next 5 years solved her problem. The GP....... :eusa-hand:

Droogs - you have my upmost sympathy.

When I first had gout, I thought my ankles were swelling due the historical football injuries i had. I paid £170 ish to see the specialist who fixed my knee. Within 1 minute he told me it was gout, and if it wasn't he would do the (£5k) operation for free to fix my ankle. Sent me back to my GP.

Regarding GP's (i have no respect or patience for them!), my current GP ( an octogenarian ) recommended I wear a pair of wellingtons stuffed with wet newspaper, to help with the swelling. The fact that my ankles were bigger than any pair of wellies you've ever seen, and that i was in absolute agony, seemed to pass him by. He is still practicing in the NHS, still taking home £100k per year, still so shocking that I always go to the out of hours doctor when i need to.

I remember how I was hallucinating after 3 days without sleep and off my T!ts on codeine - other than Covid - was the worst 3 days ever.

Anyhoo, the remedies for me were the cherry juice i mentioned previously and the Costco dried cherries.

Droogs DM incoming

Actually, as one gets older cartilage shrinks. Also our legs are not identical in length. The body compensates. That can cause muscles in the back to become unbalanced which in turn can cause back pain. But then what do I or any of us know as you seem to be the expert in everything.
