• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I have been looking at buying a Chuck and am landing on the Record Power SC4.

Before I take the plunge I’d very much welcome any views from any experienced turners as to whether this is a good choice or if there is a better option to consider. I’m a beginner but want something that has some scope to “grow into”.

Thanks in anticipation.

Robert

I've had an SC3 for years Robert and it's been very good for a small chuck, I bought it for my first little Jet lathe now sold but kept the chuck. When looking for a second I opted for the Axminster SK100 rather than the SC4 which has been faultless for me. I can't remember my reasoning now however.

Have you been on the course with Neil yet and if so what was he using? I can't remember that either.

Bob

Thanks Bob.

I’m with Neil in a couple of weeks - he’s in demand and had a long lead time which is a good sign. It may make sense to hold off until after then but I’ve caught the turning bug and want to get on!

Cheers

Robert

I give some serious consideration to a Versa Chuck Robert https://www.beaufortink.co.uk/toolpost- ... the-chucks

The beauty of it is it doesn’t limit you to one manufacturers jaws & changing the jaws is a doddle no fiddling around with screws just wind them on & off as long as you have carriers for your other jaws.

Most professional turners I know have multiple chucks so don’t have to worry about changing jaws but if I could only have one Chuck it would be the versachuck.

Plus, if you ever have a lathe with a different spindle thread you can just change the ISO backplate to fit.

As above you have the versatility of the ISO backplate - my lathe is 1½" x 6, but I bought an M33 when half price just in case of the highly unlikely change of lathe.
