• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

The Joy of the Primary Bevel

The aim is efficient and speedy sharpening. There are several ways to achieve this. Some prefer secondary micro bevels. i only use these on BU plane blades. Japanese chisels are hone on a full bevel, which is doable because it is a lamination of a thin hard steel cutting layer and a much thicker...

Many years ago I made hotdog handles for my Veritas LA Jack. The 2008 article is here: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ShopMadeTools/Building%20the%20Hotdog%20Mk%20II%20for%20the%20LV%20LA%20Jack%20pics.html Regards from Perth Derek

    Hard, hard Jarrah

I have worked with Jarrah for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is in a sense the most famous of West Australian timbers, growing in a small area south of Perth, and no where else in the world. Secondly, it has potentially beautiful figure and colour, and can create stunning furniture. Lastly, it...

    The power of tusk tenons

AJB, carrying the stand around is going to be very infrequent. This is mainly to use in the workshop. It is not to take overseas. I very much doubt that a tripod would be rigid and secure enough. I could dance on top of this stand. It runs around on wheels, which can be locked. Regards from...

    The power of tusk tenons

I would like to utilise the tools in the travel tool box in my workshop, as well as take the tool box along for joinery demonstrations at my woodwork club. The problem is that the tool box takes up too much real estate on the work bench ... not just the tool box, itself, but when storage boxes...

Elu MOF 96 - WIP... Repair? YES!

I have that little router .... in fact, I have 4 Elu routers (two 177e, a MOF97e and the MOF96). They are the best! The MOF96 was inherited - literally - after the passing of a friend of mine. It was not working, and had all the same symptoms as yours. Not sure where to get parts, I took it...

Fantasy Tool Box - last post

Thanks Andy. The school has a good rep and I am sure I will enjoy the mountain/forest surrounds as much as the activity inside the workshop. I expect to jazz up the project a little, but otherwise just happy to enjoy being part of a group. The course in not until August 2026, so there is some...

Fantasy Tool Box - last post

The travel tool box is complete. Ready - when the time comes - to be fitted inside a hard case when the time comes to fly to New Zealand. Total weight is 16Kg (40lbs). Dimensions: 540mm long x 280mm deep x 210mm high. The final part of the build was to add a carry handle. Earlier, I was...

Fantasy Tool Box - rasps in a corner

A tool kit would be incomplete without awls and files to shape curves and detail. I have several handmade Auriou rasps and rifflers as well as a range of smooth cut files for use in the woodshop. The Auriou are fantastic. Mine are about 20 years old and, although some have noticeable wear, they...

    Best Tape Measure

Discussion about tape measures remind me if a golf meme - drive for the show and putt for the dough (I am not a golfer). Tape measures are coarse tools. Precision comes from rulers. My tapes are accurate against one another, which enables the closest tape to be picked up, and accurate against...

Fantasy Tool Box - the last box, plus more ...

HI Andy, chalk is good. However not needed on this trip, thank goodness as space is tough to find even for something this small! A 2mm pencil will have to do :) Regards from Perth Derek

Fantasy Tool Box - the last box, plus more ...

There is also a marking knife with blade options (in addition to the kiridashi in the box above - the kiridashi can be used for marking or carving), a wide range of screwdriver heads and holder, a carbide burnisher, and a kerfing chisel. The awl is something I am happy with since I made the...

Does an iPhone count? :) Interestingly, I have noticed on social media that the original iPod Classic is now sought after and making a comeback. Regards from Perth Derek

There are spare blades for the fretsaw, but not in a tube. that is a good idea. Regards from Perth Derek
