• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    What are the odds?

I was working (W. Cornwall) alongside an Australian who informed me one day that his good friend, a South African was my next door neighbour. I had a chat with Mike, the S. African and it transpired that they had met in a Bar in Byron Bay (Oz) that was run by a Cornishman ............. who...

    Interesting YouTube electrical fault video

A problem with getting a fixed price for a job is that the tradesman will price to allow for all eventualities, especially in an old property. A mutual friend was to do some work for my cousin and asked if he wanted a fixed price or an hourly rate. My cousin asked for a fixed price, which he...

Restoration of a Bailey pattern plane (Stanley No. 7)

If you need to take any amount of the damaged iron off to get to the clean face you're less likely to blue it if you grind it off (near) square first then regrind the angle.

    Bread Baking

I've not long tried yet another commercial sourdough starter - two weeks and not a pinhead of a bubble. I tried a starter as decribed by Andrew Whitely .............. not a bubble. I tried a starter as described by Appolonia Poilâne ............. not a bubble. I must have tried over the...

I don’t like our new induction hob

If you go to buy pans carry a decent magnet. Non magnetic S/S is no use on induction hobs and some encapsulated ones aren't particularly good. Slow pans can be useful for stuff like béchamel that scorches quickly.

    BAILEY No7 value? Advice sought.

A few years ago I got £153 for a nice Marples No.7, admittedly they're a lot more uncommon than Stanleys. (I kept the Stanley No.8, though. :))

    Exercises in bowl-making

If you have a particularly interesting or expensive blank and wish to make the most of it you can hot melt glue a piece of scrap to it or use a paper joint. You can then either turn a tenon or screw it to a faceplate thus wasting none of the original blank. Don't be afraid of hot melt - the...

    Exercises in bowl-making

If you havent finished the inside of the bowl with the broken tenon just glue it back - cut a few little bits off, it's a clean break.
